Shula vows Rams will place Garrett where he thrives
Shula will – Defensive coordinator Chris Shula says the Los Angeles Rams are still shaping how they’ll use Myles Garrett after acquiring him on June 1, but insists the reigning Defensive Player of the Year won’t be forced out of what he does best.
The Rams don’t know yet where Myles Garrett will line up every snap. They don’t know the exact rotation, either.
What they do know is simpler: the league’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year will be used to get after the quarterback wherever the defense needs him—because that’s what he’s done better than almost anyone in the NFL for years.
Garrett, 30, joined Los Angeles in the acquisition made on June 1. He has already been part of a few offseason practices. working in individual drills with outside linebackers coach Joe Coniglio’s group. That early look set off a practical question for the Rams’ staff about how much the defense’s structure might change with Garrett’s presence. given that he spent his entire career in Cleveland playing in a 4-3 scheme.
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula addressed that directly when asked whether Garrett is an outside linebacker under the Rams—or whether his arrival alters how Shula views the defense.
“We’re still going to have our principals with that stuff. but we’re going to let him do what he does best and we all know exactly what he does best. ” Shula said last week via Stu Jackson on the team website. “You’re not going to take Michael Jordan. LeBron [James]. all those guys and pull them out of their comfort zone. We’re going to work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed.”.
Garrett’s resume is the reason the Rams are talking in terms of fit and placement rather than forced labels. He has made seven Pro Bowls and earned All-Pro honors five times. He also set the NFL’s single-season record with 23 sacks, finishing his nine-year career with 125.5 total sacks.

So they’re just gonna “let him do what he does” like… where is he actually playing though? Outside? Edge? Dude still gonna wreck quarterbacks right?
I saw “Jordan LeBron” and now I’m imagining they’re gonna baby him all season lol. But also yeah, Cleveland was 4-3 right? So Rams gotta tweak the whole defense or what.
Garrett been a beast, but calling him “Defensive Player of the Year” like it means he automatically knows their playbook. I mean they acquired him June 1… practices already? Seems kinda rushed.
They keep saying rotation and “principals” but the headline says Shula vows he’ll place Garrett where he thrives… so like, is that a promise or just PR talk? Also why is this about Joe Coniglio like that matters to regular fans?
