Shrinking Editor James Renfroe Nails Tonal Tightrope

Shrinking editor – James Renfroe, an editor on Apple TV+’s Shrinking, explains how he keeps the show’s sharp swings between comedy and tragedy from tipping into syrupy or melodramatic territory.

On Apple TV+, “Shrinking” doesn’t just move through jokes and grief—it keeps both feelings close enough to taste. The Apple TV+ series, created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, has built its warmth on characters who talk to each other with honesty, without softening the truth.

But that same devotion to emotion creates a cut-by-cut problem for editors: the show often has to carry comedy and tragedy within the same episode. and sometimes even within the same moment. As many TV editors plan early whether they’re working toward a sitcom beat or a drama beat. “Shrinking” can’t rely on genre shortcuts. It has to do both.

During an appearance on IndieWire’s Craft Roundtables. “Shrinking” editor James Renfroe broke down how he protects that balance in post-production. He starts with the characters themselves, describing them as living on their own spectrum between comedy and tragedy. His job, he said, is making sure each character stays within their own boundaries on that spectrum.

“If I feel like I’m dipping into something that’s too saccharine and it feels not real. then I generally try to avoid those performances. ” Renfroe said. “Similarly, from a comedic perspective, I try to keep in mind what my ceiling is. What characters are allowed to reach that ceiling, what characters aren’t allowed to reach that ceiling. And from a dramatic perspective, I keep an eye on where my floor is.”.

Renfroe’s approach is less about smoothing everything out and more about knowing when a character is allowed to go all the way down—or when it’s a bad landing. “If there is something incredibly tragic, it’s okay to get closer to that bottom,” he said. “But you can’t live there. and you don’t want to score it heavily so that you’re turning what would have been a dramatic moment into a melodramatic moment.”.

It’s a careful kind of control: comedy has limits, tragedy has limits, and the line between them can’t be erased. When Renfroe draws “saccharine” away from the characters and keeps melodrama from swelling up, the tonal shifts land with the same sincerity the show is built on.

IndieWire’s TV Craft Roundtables is now streaming on @PBSSoCal and the PBS App as well as IndieWire.com and on IndieWire’s social channels.
