Gunshots snapped the night in Koreatown just as crowds were gathering to watch the much-anticipated Mexico vs. South Korea World Cup match. Shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, police said a confrontation turned into gunfire near James M. Wood Boulevard and Irolo Street, about a block away from Seoul International Park.
Los Angeles Police Department officials said on Friday that a 19-year-old man shot a 50-year-old man multiple times after an argument. Police said the injured man’s condition was not immediately available, and the suspect was taken into custody.
A reporter who was at the scene said they heard three gunshots. The reporter described seeing a man in brown pants firing into the air. Video taken at the scene showed one man lying on the ground with a bleeding leg. wrapped with a green garment used as a tourniquet. Others nearby were trying to help.
In the same footage. a police officer carrying a rifle stood guard over another man also on the ground—wearing brown pants and a black shirt. At one point, the officer shouted, “Do not reach for anything,” warning the man. The officer then asked people standing nearby where the gun was. “We don’t know,” a woman yelled back. When the officer asked again for the victim, someone responded, “Over there,” as several people directed him.
The man in brown pants was later seen in handcuffs and led away while screaming at someone. Paramedics later placed the injured man on a gurney and put him into an ambulance.
Despite the violence, celebrations continued in Koreatown and elsewhere in Los Angeles throughout the night. Police helicopters roared overhead, and fireworks echoed off apartment buildings until at least midnight.
