Shifting winds push Iron Fire toward Eureka, growing fast

The Iron Fire, a human-caused wildfire discovered just west of Eureka, has burned more than 5,000 acres in north Juab County. Shifting winds are pushing it toward Eureka, prompting a Complex Incident Management Team to prepare for an in-person briefing Sunday
EUREKA, Utah — For a second day, the air over the Wasatch Front looked less like summer weather and more like a warning. Saturday morning, thick smoke hung in the sky across the region, and officials said much of it was coming from neighboring states as multiple large wildfires burned in the West.
But the concern wasn’t only what people could see from afar. The Iron Fire, a human-caused wildfire burning in north Juab County, was growing quickly and was discovered Friday just west of Eureka on the border of Juab, Tooele and Utah Counties.
The fire was first reported to be at 1,000 acres on Saturday morning. By afternoon, it had expanded to more than 5,000 acres, officials said. Shifting winds then began pushing the blaze toward Eureka.
Just before 1 p.m., Utah Fire Info officials said the fire was threatening “numerous structures” in the area, though they did not provide details about the buildings at risk.
With the flames spreading and the direction changing with the weather, Utah Fire Info ordered a Complex Incident Management Team. The team was scheduled to receive an in-briefing Sunday, and it plans to hold an in-person briefing at 6 p.m. in Elberta to provide additional details.
Smoke itself remained a day-long presence. Utah Fire Info said it’s common for haze to travel far and that limited visibility doesn’t always point to the closest fire. “Smoke can travel hundreds of miles depending on wind & weather patterns. so hazy skies don’t always mean the smoke is coming from a nearby fire. ” officials said.
Officials also urged people to limit time outdoors while smoke levels are elevated, especially for sensitive groups such as children, older individuals and pregnant women.
The growing acreage and the shifting winds have turned the area near Eureka into the next focal point as firefighters prepare to brief the public and as residents watch the smoke thickening—without fully knowing, yet, what “numerous structures” will mean on the ground.
