Percy Jackson movies surge on Netflix after TV revival

Alexandra Daddario’s “Percy Jackson” films have climbed Netflix’s charts shortly after the Disney+ TV adaptation boosted attention: “The Lightning Thief” ranks No. 1 among kids movies and No. 2 overall, while “Sea of Monsters” sits at No. 2 and No. 4 on the sa

For a franchise that once felt like it had to fight for attention, “Percy Jackson” is suddenly everywhere again—this time not because a new movie premiered, but because the story returned to screens in a different form.

Since being added earlier this month, “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” is climbing fast on Netflix. On the streaming charts cited by FlixPatrol, the 2010 film is currently the No. 1 kids movie streaming on Netflix, and No. 2 among movies overall. “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” released in 2013, is also rising: it’s at No. 2 on the kids chart and No. 4 among movies overall.

The surge brings Alexandra Daddario back into the spotlight in a very specific way. Before vacationing at “The White Lotus. ” surviving disaster in “San Andreas. ” and getting tangled up with a cop’s mid-life crisis in “True Detective. ” she played Annabeth Chase—daughter of Athena—in both “Percy Jackson” movies. In the franchise. Annabeth may not have the flashiest powers of the other demigods. but the abilities handed down from her mother put her ahead when problems turn supernatural and plans turn complicated.

The timing of the revival matters. The movie series was revisited as a TV adaptation, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” created for Disney+. While the films originally arrived during Hollywood’s search for the next “Harry Potter” and slightly before the push for the next “Hunger Games. ” they still landed a place among the more successful YA fantasy releases of that era. They also received mixed reviews from critics. But in the same comparison set, the franchise did better than titles like “The Seeker” or “Seventh Son.”.

That Netflix momentum is also a reminder of how much the first films shaped Daddario’s career. The movies had director Chris Columbus leading “The Lightning Thief. ” drawing on his track record from the first two “Harry Potter” movies. “Sea of Monsters” was directed by Thor Freudenthal, who previously directed “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”.

Even as the film franchise faltered before all four books in Rick Riordan’s “Camp Half-Blood Chronicles” were adapted. it still did something enduring: it launched Daddario into wider recognition. In a 2021 interview with The Wrap, she described what it felt like stepping into the role as a young actor. “I loved ‘Percy Jackson.’ Like, I loved it. When I stepped into ‘Percy Jackson’ and got that job, I had no idea what it was.

I was like, a bit part actor in New York City, you know?. I was a kid. I was working at a bar. I didn’t have any idea of Hollywood or of all this stuff. And so when I got that job, I didn’t really know what I was stepping into. I knew it was a really big movie. And it was the most amazing experience for a 22/23-year-old to have … I learned so

much and I’ve gone on to have a career in the business that I wanted to have.”.

The TV reboot has its own casting story—one that connects to Daddario directly. When the “Percy Jackson” show came around. Leah Jeffries was cast as Annabeth Chase. and Daddario’s enthusiastic support is part of how the transition has been framed. And there’s more on the way: season 3 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians. ” based on the third book. “The Titan’s Curse. ” is set to release later in 2026.

For now, viewers who catch the series on Netflix have the movies as a ready follow-up. Both “Percy Jackson” films—“The Lightning Thief” and “Sea of Monsters”—are available to watch on Netflix as their chart climbs continue.

  1. I swear I watched “Sea of Monsters” like 100 times already in middle school. Guess it finally found its way back. Annabeth is still my fave even if I don’t remember anything.

  2. Alexandra Daddario popped back on my feed so I assumed she was in a new movie or something, not just the old ones going up the charts. Also why are people acting like Netflix is the only place, Disney+ had it first right?

  3. This whole Percy Jackson thing is getting marketed again because Disney can’t let anything die, which is fine I guess. But I don’t get how it’s No. 1 “kids movies” like is that different from regular movies? Feels like a loophole for the charts, but whatever, my nephew’s gonna watch it anyway.
