Sheridan’s Worst-Rated Spin-Off Still Lures Massive Viewers

Marshals still – Despite poor critical and audience scores, Paramount+’s Marshals—created by Spencer Hudnut and executive-produced by Taylor Sheridan—stuck the landing with viewers. The 13-episode debut ran from March 1 to May 24, logged strong Nielsen performance, and kept fi

For 13 episodes, Kayce Dutton has been dragged through another harsh chapter of the Taylor Sheridan universe—one that critics didn’t seem to enjoy, and yet viewers kept pressing play.

Marshals premiered on March 1 and wrapped its debut season on May 24. Even with the backlash it collected along the way. the series repeatedly showed up on Nielsen’s weekly Nielsen charts for a run that often had it competing for attention with just one other narrative series on the list behind CBS’s Tracker.

In its final two weeks. Marshals also landed on Nielsen’s acquired series rankings. appearing alongside established favorites like The Big Bang Theory. Criminal Minds. Grey’s Anatomy. and SpongeBob SquarePants. After the season finale. the show accrued more than 522 minutes watched following the week of its finale. according to the latest Nielsen report.

This is the part that keeps getting under everyone’s skin: Marshals didn’t just ride on the Yellowstone name—it performed across platforms. The series remains one of the most-watched titles on Paramount+, with viewership also tracked via FlixPatrol. And that matters because Marshals is exactly where Paramount took a strategic risk: it expanded Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise to linear television. even though it was understood that most franchise viewers watched it on Paramount+.

The gamble, however, paid off. Marshals consistently established itself as one of the most-watched titles on TV, while also drawing significant viewership on Paramount+.

That trajectory is also a continuation of a broader Sheridan pattern. Landman proved that Taylor Sheridan was effectively critic-proof. It defied significant backlash to become a major hit for Paramount+. and that momentum continued when it returned for a second season. Marshals. though. comes with a different creative setup: it’s a series Sheridan executive-produced with little creative input. and it has still emerged as a cross-platform hit despite poor reviews from both critics and audiences.

The reception side of the story is hard to miss. Marshals holds the distinction of being the lowest-rated installment of the Yellowstone franchise. with a 48% critics’ score and a 27% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus on the aggregator’s page reads: “Marshals confines Kayce Dutton within a dim procedural that lacks the narrative spark and intrigue that Yellowstone managed instantly. making this one ham-fisted trek.”.

Even with that kind of verdict hanging over it, the show’s numbers tell a different story—one measured in rankings, watched minutes, and the stubborn reality that viewers didn’t treat Marshals like a cautionary tale.

Marshals centers on the adventures of Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of Kevin Costner’s character in Yellowstone, played by Luke Grimes. The series was created by Spencer Hudnut, who also serves as showrunner. The writers are Spencer Hudnut, Tom Mularz, and Dana Greenblatt.
