Shaq names his all-time five—LeBron left out

Shaq all-time – Shaquille O’Neal laid out his all-time starting five on New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce, building a lineup around Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan—and himself. The one glaring absence: LeBron James. Shaq said he doesn’t like these l

Shaquille O’Neal didn’t stumble when he was asked who would make his all-time starting five. He answered fast, and the decision landed with a familiar jolt for NBA fans: LeBron James was not on the list.

During an appearance on New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce, the Los Angeles Lakers legend was asked to name his top five. O’Neal’s lineup went: “[Stephen] Curry at the one,” “[Kobe] Bryant at the two,” “[Michael] Jordan at the three,” “Tim Duncan at the four,” and “me at the five.”

O’Neal then added what sounded less like debate and more like a verdict: “And nobody’s beating that team.”

He admitted he understands why people will react. In his view, all-time lists are designed to trigger arguments—especially when a modern superstar is left off.

“I hate doing these lists because I don’t know how your guy is going to edit it, right? But let’s just say I did that to somebody that didn’t like us, and then they’ll lead it off with ‘Shaq excludes LeBron,’ right? And then it causes unnecessary beef,” O’Neal said.

The criticism is easy to predict. LeBron’s name is routinely near the top of nearly every all-time starting lineup question, and Shaq’s exclusion makes the conversation immediately personal. But O’Neal framed the issue as fit—not fame.

When he explained what he wanted from the construction of his team, he emphasized shooting and the way each player’s role would mesh. “I need a shooter,” O’Neal said. “I need the best shooter in the world.” He pointed to Curry as the answer.

Then he grounded the rest of his lineup in familiarity and trust. “Second guy I name is a guy I helped raise,” he said, referring to Kobe Bryant. “I know he’s a [expletive] dog. I know what he’s going to do.”

He also talked through how Jordan, Curry, and the others would operate around each other, painting a picture of what happens when opposing teams focus on one threat.

“So you got Steph shooting threes when I get doubled. You got Kobe and Michael doing this inner thing, and then you got the Big Fundamental taking that [expletive], facing you up, shooting off the glass. And then you got me. That’s my team.”

The logic is built to sound simple: Curry spaces the floor, Bryant and Jordan attack the interior, Tim Duncan—“the Big Fundamental”—keeps a scoring presence that can’t be ignored, and O’Neal rounds it out.

By the end of the defense, the lineup holds together the way Shaq wants it to: elite offense and high-level accountability on defense, with roles that would supposedly translate cleanly from idea to execution.

Still, the same truth stays intact. Even with an “unstoppable” five-man squad in his mind. O’Neal will likely face the usual backlash for leaving LeBron James off a list where many fans expect him to be. In this debate. the argument isn’t whether O’Neal can pick a team—it’s whether fans will accept the reasons for what he left out.

  1. Wait so LeBron is just “left out” like that? That’s wild. I swear every time somebody makes a list they do it just to start beef.

  2. Lmao Shaq still salty? Like he’s saying it’s about fit but it kinda sounds like he’s mad that LeBron is the default pick. Also Tim Duncan AND Kobe? okay sure but LeBron should’ve at least been on there somewhere.

  3. I think people are missing the point. Curry at the 1, Jordan at the 3… that’s basically a video game lineup. But how does LeBron not make it if he’s literally good at everything? Unless Shaq meant “shooting” like free throws or something, not actual jumpers? Anyway Shaq is gonna get clowned for this no matter what.
