Madison Square Garden didn’t just react when Landry Shamet’s three-pointer went in — it erupted.

New York’s crowd was already raucous for the Knicks’ Game 1 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. but the moment Shamet hit in overtime turned the atmosphere from loud to unmistakably frenzied. A video courtesy of Jared Schwartz captured the second the shot dropped: the room first let out a collective. audible gasp as the ball bounced around before finding the bottom of the net. then the euphoria took over and carried everyone along.

That swing didn’t happen in a vacuum. Shamet’s make helped seal the victory for New York, and it came as the Knicks were already rolling through overtime with a 9-0 run to begin the extra period.

Shamet has become the kind of postseason presence that keeps getting labeled “unsung” — and he’s been earning it. Coming off the bench, he still carved out major minutes and impact as New York’s run has progressed.

He was quiet during the Atlanta Hawks series and in the first two games against the Philadelphia 76ers. But the turning point arrived in Game 3. when he scored 15 points in 26 minutes. going 5-for-6 from the field to give the Knicks a noticeable boost. He followed up in Game 4 with a 12-point performance against the Sixers. again shooting well from deep. making 66.7% of his three-pointers.

In the Eastern Conference Finals, the rhythm carried straight through. In Game 1 versus the Cavaliers, all three of Shamet’s makes were three-pointers, and he went 100% from behind the arc in the game.

To beat Cleveland, the Knicks will need more of that same off-the-bench production. The message from New York’s own home crowd was clear in the overtime moment: when Shamet’s shot goes in, the entire building moves with it.

It also fits the path he has taken to get here. Throughout his NBA career, Shamet has been a journeyman after starting his career in Philly. He has played for the Los Angeles Clippers. the Brooklyn Nets. the Phoenix Suns. the Washington Wizards. and the Westchester Knicks before seemingly finding a home with the Knicks.
