For a stretch on Tuesday afternoon, the sky over southeast Michigan didn’t just threaten—rotation actually showed up on the radar, slow and persistent, before it finally fizzled out.

Four tornado warnings were issued across the region. They covered Wayne, Genesee, Shiawassee and Saginaw counties, with the most severe section of weather hitting Downriver in southern Wayne County this afternoon.

As storms churned through, the disruption wasn’t limited to the roads. A ground stop was issued at Detroit Metropolitan Airport until 6:45 due to thunderstorms, according to the FAA.

Weather Authority Stephanie Mead described what people were seeing in the storms as the rotation moved slowly. She said that before it died out, while the slow-moving storm was moving at about 20 miles per hour.

Rain and wind brought their own kind of danger. Widespread rain and thunderstorms raised the threat of heavy downpours, with potential for pockets of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in a short period of time. Gusty downburst winds were also expected.

The concern didn’t end with the afternoon warnings. A second round of active weather was expected to move in tonight.

Even as the severe weather threat shifted. the forecast for the rest of the week leaned into heat and humidity—conditions that can keep storms energized. Heat was expected to continue tomorrow and Thursday with highs in the 90s. and heat index values in the mid to upper 90s. Storms were still expected, with downpours and windy conditions arriving by afternoon.

Scattered showers were expected for Wednesday, with storms possible again Thursday.

The sequence is clear in the facts: multiple tornado warnings for several counties, the heaviest impacts concentrating over Downriver in southern Wayne County, and an airport ground stop tied to thunderstorms—followed by a reminder that tonight could bring another active push.
