Serena Williams hasn’t just come back to tennis—she’s returned to the grounds where she built a legend. On Tuesday, June 30, the 44-year-old will step onto the Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis Club for her first Wimbledon singles match since the 2022 U.S. Open.
Her opponent is Maya Joint, a 20-year-old from Australia. The match, scheduled for approximately 12 p.m. ET, will be the third Centre Court matchup on the day. Before Williams, No. 3 Iga Swiatek will play Taylor Townsend at 8:30 a.m. ET in women’s singles, followed by No. 2 Alexander Zverev against Alexander Blockx in men’s singles.
Williams’ presence carries weight at Wimbledon. She has won seven singles titles there, with championships coming in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. Two of those early-era triumphs—2002, 2003, and 2009—came against her sister, Venus Williams.
The timeline of her return has been anything but quiet. Williams announced her comeback on June 1, after a four-year hiatus. Her first on-court action came at Queen’s Club in London. where she and doubles partner Victoria Mboko won their first-round doubles match on June 9. But that momentum didn’t last: Williams had to withdraw when Mboko injured her knee in a singles match.
She then partnered with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open on June 16. Williams and Muchova lost in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4, to Erin Routliffe and Giuliana Olmos. The same day, Williams announced she would play doubles with her sister Venus Williams at Wimbledon.
On June 21, it was reported that Williams was granted a wildcard to play Wimbledon singles as well.
That mix—wildcard entry. a carefully measured comeback. and a singles return after a long gap—has reshaped what Wimbledon means to her. On June 28, Williams said her expectations were different for the first time in her career. “Not that I never enjoyed it before because I wouldn’t be here today, but I’m gonna enjoy being out there.”.
This comeback has also been staged with a familiar Wimbledon thread: doubles success. When Williams has partnered with Venus at Wimbledon, they have captured six women’s doubles championships—in 2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2016. Two of those six titles, in 2000 and 2002, came after entering Wimbledon as wildcards.
The match airing details are set for viewers and fans preparing for what is, for Williams, a new chapter on the same hallowed courts. The match is airing on ESPN, and it can also be streamed on Fubo or through the ESPN app.
