Serena Williams lands Wimbledon singles wild card for 2026

Serena Williams is set for her first Wimbledon singles appearance since returning to professional tennis, receiving a wild card into the 2026 ladies’ singles draw—an abrupt end to weeks of speculation after she previously declined to confirm a return.

Serena Williams isn’t waiting any longer to step back onto Wimbledon’s grass as a singles player.

The tournament announced Sunday on X. formerly Twitter. that Williams has been handed a wild card into the ladies’ singles draw for the 2026 Championships. Wimbledon described it plainly in its post: “This is not a drill. Serena Williams will compete in the 2026 ladies’ singles at Wimbledon as a wild card.”.

For Williams, it marks her first singles appearance at Wimbledon since her return to professional tennis—exactly the kind of comeback chapter fans had been watching for, even as uncertainty lingered.

Those weeks of speculation had been fuelled earlier this month. when Williams was asked about the possibility of accepting a wild card. She didn’t give a commitment. Instead, she joked about the timing and readiness, saying, “Oh my Gosh, there’s some left?. Would you be interested if I took it?. You think I’m ready for singles,” before adding, “I need to go to work.”.

While the singles answer was unclear, her preparation had been visible in another form: doubles.

Over the past several weeks, Williams eased back into competition through doubles play. She returned to the WTA Tour at Queen’s Club alongside Victoria Mboko, and the pair earned a doubles win in their first match back.

Wimbledon itself has always held special weight for Williams. She won seven singles titles at the All England Club, and her record on grass has long placed her among the sport’s most accomplished performers on the surface.

The singles wild card also comes with her already being set for Wimbledon doubles competition. She had secured a place in the Wimbledon doubles draw alongside her sister. Venus Williams. after the pair received a wild card earlier this month. Williams said the idea started with her daughter, Olympia.

“The idea originated with my daughter, Olympia,” she explained, adding: “Well, I think it’s going to be fun. My daughter Olympia told me that I should play with Venus. She’s always right.”

Wimbledon begins June 29, and with the 2026 singles wild card now confirmed, Williams’ return to the biggest grass-court stage is no longer a question mark—it’s a schedule change.

Between the earlier uncertainty and the final announcement, the timeline has tightened fast. For Williams, and for the crowd that has known her greatness on these courts for years, this is the moment that turns speculation into matches.
