A race to fill the seat of a late congressmember has headed to a runoff.
Maryce Scott, the daughter of late U.S. Rep. David Scott, is set to face Everton Blair in a runoff election following the results of a special election in Georgia on Tuesday, July 28.
David Scott unexpectedly passed away at 80 in April. A Democrat, Scott was a longtime politician who represented Georgia’s 13th congressional district, which includes parts of Clayton, Henry, Rockdale, Newton, Gwinnett and DeKalb Counties in the Atlanta metro area.
It is the first time Scott has not been on the ticket since the district was created after the 2000 census — but his daughter is on the ballot instead.

Who won David Scott’s House seat?
Here’s how the other candidates performed, as of Wednesday morning (99% of votes counted):
- Marcye Scott (Democrat) – 46%
- Everton Blair (Democrat) – 37.4%
- Caesar Gonzales (Republican) – 8.7%
- Fayth Park (Republican) – 4.7%
- Carlos Moore (Democrat) – 3.1%
Blair is an educator who served on President Obama’s White House Initiative on Educational Excellence. Scott touts her over two decades of public service, according to her campaign website.
The special election will fill Scott’s seat through the end of his term. Democrat Jasmine Clark and Republican Jonathan Chavez earned spots in the May 19 primary for the race to replace Scott for the next term, beginning in January 2027.
The winner of the special election runoff on Aug. 15 will be sworn into office immediately, serving in Scott’s seat until early next year when his full-time successor takes the oath of office. Either way, a Democrat holds Scott’s seat as Republicans protect a narrow majority in the House, hoping to pass a number of key items in President Donald Trump’s agenda before the year’s end.
