Scott Pelley’s 60 Minutes Exit Comes ‘For Cause’

Scott Pelley was terminated “for cause” effective immediately after a reported dispute with CBS News executives, including a clash over his stance toward the future of 60 Minutes, as other veteran journalists were also fired or saw their contracts end.
By the time Scott Pelley’s name was the one latest to surface, the unease around 60 Minutes had already been building. In May 2026, CBS News—reshaped since CBS parent Paramount merged with Skydance last year—saw multiple veteran journalists lose their roles at the news magazine program.
Pelley, who joined 60 Minutes in 2004, was the most recent to be cut. His termination, according to a note from executive producer Nick Bilton to 60 Minutes staff members, came after what was described as a dispute with executives.
Bilton confirmed to staff that CBS had “parted ways” with Pelley. In the letter. Bilton told employees he made “repeated attempts to have direct conversations” with Pelley over the weekend. and that an effort to reach “common ground” did not happen. Bilton wrote. “I know how much Scott meant to many of you. and I don’t say this lightly. ” before adding: “That was not the path Scott chose.”.
The termination language was direct. In a letter to Pelley described in reporting as a copy obtained by NBC News. Bilton wrote that Pelley’s “antipathy to the future” of 60 Minutes was clear “loud and clear.” Bilton then informed him that “your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately.”.
Pelley wasn’t alone in the shakeup. Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi also publicly confirmed their exits from 60 Minutes. Vega. the first Latina correspondent on the program. announced her firing and accused CBS of trying to manipulate her team’s reporting. She alleged that “In recent months. my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories. ” and that “Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.”.
Alfonsi’s situation played out differently, but it ended the same way: her contract was not renewed. She said in a public statement that her weekend contract expiration “drawing to a close 20 twenty years with the network. including more than a decade at 60 Minutes.” Alfonsi also tied her departure to an “intense editorial dispute over our CECOT story. ” saying repeated attempts by her representation to find a path forward were met with “absolute silence from network executives.” Her message. she said. was blunt: “my time at 60 Minutes is apparently over.”.
The pieces fit together in a way that leaves staff and viewers with the same question: if the official explanation points to a clash over the show’s direction and the wording of employment termination. what does it mean for the internal process of editorial decisions—especially when Vega describes a climate where teams held back on pitches and Alfonsi describes silence after dispute attempts.
As of the time of publication, CBS had not announced any formal decision about the future of 60 Minutes, and the program had not been canceled.

“For cause” sounds like they just wanted an easy reason and not the real one.
So they merged and then suddenly everyone’s gone? That’s wild. I don’t even watch 60 Minutes that much but it feels like they’re wiping out the whole vibe and calling it “future” stuff.
Wait so Scott Pelley got fired because he was “anti future”?? Like he didn’t want new segments or whatever. Seems kinda backwards because wouldn’t producers want change? Also NBC got a copy of the letter so of course everyone knows. I’m confused.
This is why I’m skeptical of media companies after these mergers. First Paramount and Skydance and then boom, “parted ways” and “for cause” language. If Cecilia Vega got accused of manipulation too then it’s probably more than just personality drama. But who knows, maybe they all fought over the script or something.
