LOS ANGELES — The night started with a familiar statement of intent, then turned into something harder to ignore: A’ja Wilson controlling the game from every angle.
Wilson finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks as the Las Vegas Aces beat the Los Angeles Sparks 79-69 on Tuesday night. Jackie Young backed her with 16 points and nine assists, while Chelsea Gray contributed 12 points and 11 assists for Las Vegas (6-3).
Wilson’s impact wasn’t just measured in the box score. She moved into eighth on the WNBA career blocks list, passing Tammy Sutton-Brown with 555. The defensive pressure she applied was one piece of a larger picture that helped Las Vegas turn a lead into separation.
For Los Angeles (4-5), Rae Burrell delivered a career-high 22 points. Nneka Ogwumike added 12 points and 12 rebounds, including taking sole possession of fifth on the WNBA career rebounding list by passing Tamika Catchings with 3,315.
But Burrell couldn’t carry the load alone. Burrell was 7 of 10 from the field for 17 points through three quarters, while her teammates combined to go 8 of 38 for 34 points.
The turning point came in the third quarter. Las Vegas opened with an 8-0 run to build a 57-42 lead. Young then made a floater in the lane with 5.6 seconds left in the frame to push the advantage to 13.
Los Angeles clawed back when Burrell completed a three-point play with 2:48 remaining to pull the Sparks within 71-64. Still, the teams traded long stretches of missed opportunities—neither scored again until the 1:40 mark, when Wilson converted a three-point play to restore a 10-point lead.
Even as the Sparks worked to respond, key absences and misfires shaped the night. Kelsey Plum (ankle) missed her third straight game for Los Angeles. Dearica Hamby went 0 for 7 from the field, her first game without a made field goal since July 9, 2023.
Las Vegas will now host Golden State on Saturday. Los Angeles, meanwhile, continues a three-game homestand on Friday against Dallas.

25-15-5 blocks is wild. Somebody check the rim lol.
I saw Burrell had 22 and thought Sparks might steal it, but then the rest of the team went cold?? 8 of 38 is basically brutal.
Wait so Wilson passed Tammy Sutton-Brown with 555 blocks, but also Ogwumike took fifth rebounding spot? I’m confused why that matters mid-game. Still sounds like Aces just had more points somehow.
Kelsey Plum being out again and Hamby 0-7… that’s like two strikes before the game even starts. But sure, A’ja was unstoppable, I get it. Also I love when they say “turning point third quarter” like it’s a movie scene, 8-0 run yeah no kidding.
