School employee accused of stabbing delivery driver with pen: Police

A Memphis middle school employee has been charged with felony assault after authorities say he stabbed a delivery driver with a pen for being late.

Braxton Stewart, 36, has been charged with felony aggravated assault for the Aug. 20 stabbing, according to a Memphis Police Department affidavit obtained by USA TODAY.

According to authorities, the stabbing happened just before 9:30 a.m. that day at American Way Middle School, where Stewart works as part of Memphis Shelby County Schools.

Online court records show that Stewart has a public defender, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Aug. 26.

USA TODAY also contacted Memphis Shelby County Schools on Aug. 26 to get more information on Stewart’s employment there but did not immediately receive a response.

Here’s what we know about the stabbing that led to his charges.

Delivery driver was stabbed six times, affidavit states

Someone called Memphis police to American Way Middle School at 9:26 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, about a “wounding,” according to the affidavit.

Officers spoke to an individual at the scene who said he was making a delivery to the middle school. According to the driver, he was late and got into an argument with Stewart, who pushed him in the chest.

The pair then began fighting. That’s when Stewart allegedly stabbed the driver with a pen multiple times, per the affidavit. Officers looked at the driver and saw six puncture wounds – four on his back, one between his eyes and one on the left side of his neck.

Emergency responders took the driver to a local hospital while officers took Stewart into custody, the affidavit read. Police took Stewart to a nearby police station, where he invoked his rights.
