Scheffler’s final-hole miss leaves sub-60 dream

Scheffler misses – Scottie Scheffler settled for a 10-under 60 after missing a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, narrowly falling short of another sub-60 round amid exceptionally low scoring.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Scottie Scheffler stood over a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Friday at the Travelers Championship, one stroke away from another sub-60 round. He couldn’t convert, and instead posted a 10-under 60 on the soft TPC River Highlands course.

The moment mattered. It was the kind of miss that echoes on days when everything is dropping. With the final signature event of the regular season turning into a scoring outpouring, Scheffler’s 60 still set an early target atop the scoreboard.

Moments earlier, Viktor Hovland needed to birdie the final two holes to reach 59. He did not. He settled for a pair of pars and posted a 61, matching his career best on tour. Akshay Bhatia recorded a 62.

As play moved toward the finish, Scheffler was at 16-under 124, two shots ahead of Hovland when he completed his round. Eric Cole, the 18-hole leader, still had four holes left in his round.

This wasn’t the first time Scheffler has flirted with 59. In his rookie season in 2020, he shot 59 in the second round of The Northern Trust at the TPC Boston. That week, the rain-softened course produced low scoring, with Dustin Johnson at 11 under through 11 holes before he had to settle for a 60.

Only a small group has managed what Scheffler was aiming for. Jim Furyk is the other standout name in PGA Tour history with two sub-60 rounds. Furyk’s first came in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship at Conway Farms outside Chicago. a 59 that included a bogey on his card. Three years later, he set the PGA Tour record at the Travelers Championship with a 58 in the final round. Furyk did not win either tournament.

Scheffler arrived at Cromwell coming off a tie for fourth at the U.S. Open, where he played the final round. His last victory was The American Express in the California desert—his first start of the year. Two years ago, he won the Travelers Championship.

On a course built for fireworks, a missed putt on 18 still feels like more than a number. It was close enough to make the day sting, even as the leaderboard kept moving toward lower scores.
