Harry and Meghan could base at Althorp in July

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to return to the U.K. in July 2026, with royal observers saying Althorp—Princess Diana’s ancestral home—may be among the places they consider staying. Althorp is scheduled to close to visitors on July 10 and 11, the
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle land in the U.K. next month, the question won’t just be where they’ll be seen. It will be where they’ll feel safe.
The Sussexes are expected to travel to Britain for celebrations marking the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027. For Harry and Meghan. it would also be a major return: it would mark the first time in four years the Duke of Sussex—who lives in California—has come back to his home country with his wife and their two children.
Among the possibilities now being discussed is a stay at Princess Diana’s ancestral home, Althorp House.
That timing puts Althorp in the spotlight. The estate. about an hour from Birmingham. is scheduled to close to visitors on July 10 and 11—dates that align with when Harry and Meghan are expected to be in the U.K. Fox News Digital reached out to Archewell, which represents the offices of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, for comment. Archewell did not comment on the couple’s accommodations for security reasons. Fox News Digital also reached out to an Althorp spokesperson for comment.
If the Sussexes do stay there, it would be for reasons beyond geography. For Harry, Althorp represents a direct line to his mother’s legacy—and, just as importantly, a rare pocket of privacy.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard said Althorp offers something Buckingham Palace cannot. She described the estate as a place where Harry can engage with Diana’s story on his own terms. without the royal household’s protocol. Chard also tied the choice to the day-to-day needs of a family that keeps its children’s lives tightly guarded.
In her view, Althorp’s seclusion and privacy would match the way Meghan prefers to operate, and it would allow the Sussexes to “call the shots.” Chard said Harry has spoken often about wanting Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know Diana’s story.
The last time Meghan Markle visited Harry’s home country officially was in September 2022. when they were in Britain for charity events. Their trip shifted dramatically after Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, and the couple remained in the U.K. to join the royal family for the late queen’s funeral.
Althorp is also where Diana is buried, away from the glare of constant media attention. Chard pointed to the timing of the visit as well: she said it would come shortly after Princess of Wales’ July 1 birthday. The visit would also be a significant stop for Lilibet, 5, whose middle name honors her grandmother.
Royal observers say the logistics—and the optics—could matter as much as the sentiment.
People previously reported that King Charles had offered the Sussexes accommodations on a royal estate. but there has been no public response to the offer. Fox News Digital reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. The outlet also reported that the monarch previously offered Harry accommodations at Buckingham Palace, which he declined.
Royal commentator Amanda Matta argued that choosing Althorp instead of a royal property would send a message—one that prioritizes Diana’s connection and the family’s privacy over institutional alignment right now.
Matta also described a wider picture: Buckingham Palace has been undergoing extensive renovations. and it has largely fallen out of use since Charles’ accession. She said Charles prefers to stay at Clarence House or Highgrove. and she added that even Prince William has signaled Buckingham Palace won’t be his primary residence as king.
In Matta’s telling, Althorp is not just an alternative; it changes the emotional and social environment. She said it would make it unlikely for the Sussexes to have a “casual run-in” with members of the royal family. because senior royals’ schedules are highly managed. She said if they do not want to bump into Harry and Meghan. they won’t—and summer’s social season or private family holidays can provide easy cover.
Other experts made a similar point from a different angle. British royal expert Hilary Fordwich said staying at Althorp could also work in the king’s favor. arguing it would be better than a move to Buckingham Palace because any question of taxpayer funding is removed. She said the king could “save face. ” and the Sussexes would be well away from Prince William. who is said to want nothing to do with them.
The estate itself has history here. Harry has previously stayed at Althorp, which is owned by his uncle, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, during visits to the U.K.
There is also the question of security and what the official state setup would—or wouldn’t—trigger. If Harry and his family stay at a royal residence, there would be no automatic security provisions, which are determined by the Home Office, People reported.
The couple lost their taxpayer-funded police protection when they stepped back as senior working royals in 2020. Harry has challenged that decision in court, citing safety concerns for his wife and children, the outlet reported.
On the wider family front, experts say reconciliation with Prince William remains unlikely amid an ongoing rift. Matta said staying at Althorp would not prevent the Sussexes from seeing Charles during their stay in Britain. but it would take more planning if they are keeping distance from royal property.
No plans for a reunion between the king and his son have been confirmed. The pair met during previous visits when Harry traveled to the U.K. alone.
The last time they were reunited in person was in September 2025 at the king’s London residence, where they met privately for 55 minutes. It was their first in-person meeting in 19 months. At the time, Harry was in the U.K. for the WellChild Awards and Invictus-related events.
There is also a personal framing to the trip that some experts believe could be driving the decision. Matta said the visit feels more like a personal pilgrimage focused on building family ties than a strategic move toward “peace talks.” She said that would be especially true if the Sussexes stay at Althorp.
Still, others think the Sussexes will not ignore the wider attention their appearance is likely to draw. Chard said Princess Diana, Invictus, and a “next chapter” create rich documentary material. She pointed to the calendar: the 2027 anniversary of Diana’s death alongside the Birmingham Invictus Games creates a natural timeline. She said whether it turns into a sequel project depends on how much access the Sussexes want to give versus how much privacy they want for their children. and she said the first photos of the children at Diana’s grave would be “media gold.”.
Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, previously told Fox News Digital that while some within the House of Windsor fear private conversations could be leaked to the press, Harry may have already learned his lesson.
Wakeford said Harry hasn’t publicly said he’s sorry about what he said to William. but he does. from his sources. regret some of the things Harry said in the Netflix documentary and in the book Spare about William and his father. He added that there are no plans to continue any projects—whether Netflix and books—that would talk about his family in similar ways.
As the Sussexes prepare to return. royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said he wouldn’t be surprised if they benefit from the enduring “Diana effect” as they seek to rebuild their image in Britain. He argued that how they handle the visit—if it happens—will be pivotal in assessing their intentions. noting that they have not succeeded in Hollywood but plan to turn the world’s media interest in their visit to their advantage. Fitzwilliams said the link with Diana could be pivotal in their strategy in challenging “abysmally low popularity ratings” in the U.K.
For now. one detail is already sharpening attention: Althorp House is set to close to visitors on July 10 and 11. the same dates Harry and Meghan are expected to be in the U.K. If the Sussexes choose to stay there. it would place their return in the middle of Diana’s story—while keeping them. as many experts expect. far from the pressure of royal protocol and the unpredictability of chance encounters.
