Scary Movie Falls 70% Yet Heads Toward Profit

Scary Movie is down hard in its second weekend, dropping 70% at the domestic box office. Still, with a $30 million production cost and a fast-rising total, the horror spoof is positioned to end up profitable.

Scary Movie is crashing down at the box office—but it isn’t doing it so fast that the movie can’t make money.

In its second weekend, the latest entry in the horror spoof series sits at No. 3 on the domestic box office. The problem is what comes with that spot: the film suffered a 70% decline in its second weekend in theaters.

Even with that steep drop, the numbers keep moving. Scary Movie added $14.5 million from 3,504 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $84.5 million. Worldwide, it has reached $173.1 million.

The production budget is one reason the downturn isn’t enough to derail the bigger picture. The movie reportedly cost $30 million to produce, which puts it on track to be a financial success despite the drastic weekend fall.

The film’s premise brings the chaos back around the same familiar kind of horror-movie bait. Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”). the Core Four return in Scary Movie as Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”). Shawn Wayans (“Ray”). Anna Faris (“Cindy”). and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite as everything horror-related starts getting targeted. The synopsis says no horror movie IP is safe. with the group cutting through reboots. remakes. requels. prequels. sequels. spin-offs. elevated horror. origin stories. anything with the word legacy in it. and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final—where “nothing is sacred” and “every line gets crossed.”.

The cast roster leans into the familiar and the new at once. Kenan Thompson. Dave Sheridan. Lochlyn Munro. Kim Wayans. Cheri Oteri. Chris Elliott. Damon Wayans Jr. Heidi Gardner. Olivia Rose Keegan. Cameron Scott Roberts. Savannah Lee Nassif. Sydney Park. Gregg Wayans. Benny Zielke. and Ruby Snowber are all listed as starring in the movie alongside the Wayans and Faris and Hall.

The critics reaction is still a work in progress, with the source noting that reviews aren’t exactly “laughing at the film.”

Taken together, the story on the screen and the story in the receipts are colliding in an odd way: Scary Movie is losing momentum in theaters, but it’s doing it after already pulling in big totals—and with a relatively low budget, that may be enough to keep the punchline landing.

  1. How is it “still profitable” if it fell 70% 😵‍💫 like math not mathing. I swear these articles always spin it.

  2. It says 84.5 domestic but also “headed toward profit” which means the studio is cooking the books again? Also sequels aren’t sacred?? that sounds like the real horror is the writing.

  3. I don’t even get why people keep making these horror spoof movies if critics aren’t laughing. The cast list is huge but I’m like… if it’s down hard wouldn’t the whole thing be a loss? Maybe they count international like it’s free money or whatever. Either way 70% is a yikes.
