Satellites show fire at St. Petersburg oil terminal

blazing St. – Satellite imagery captured a Russian oil terminal in flames after Ukrainian strikes on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, alongside damage to the Steregushchy-class corvette Boikiy and attacks on targets in Russia’s Tambov regi

Smoke rose above St. Petersburg on the same day Russia invited the world to its annual economic showcase. New satellite imagery shows an oil terminal burning, a plume of smoke visible as fire crews work near a damaged warship in the Kronstadt naval port area.

Ukrainian military officials said Wednesday that they carried out strikes on the St. Petersburg oil terminal, the nearby Kronstadt naval port, and other military-linked targets across Russia. The claims come as the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum unfolded in Vladimir Putin’s hometown.

The burning facility sits nearly 700 miles from the Ukrainian border and is described by Ukrainian officials as a major hub: one of the “largest transshipment complexes for petroleum products” in the Baltic region. Imagery captured by the US spatial intelligence firm Vantor shows a large plume of smoke at the oil terminal. with the pictures taken on May 8.

Kronstadt—an island near St. Petersburg in the Gulf of Finland—also features in the damage assessment. Additional imagery shared with Business Insider shows the damaged Steregushchy-class corvette Boikiy in a dry dock at Kronstadt. Fire crews are shown tending to the burning warship with high-pressure water cannons.

Footage shared by the Ukrainian military adds detail to the attack sequence: one drone targeting the corvette. with another capturing a fire after an initial strike. The Boikiy was commissioned in 2013. Ukrainian officials said it had escorted Russian so-called “shadow fleet” vessels that transport sanctioned oil before entering maintenance earlier this year.

The broader strike campaign was not limited to St. Petersburg. Ukrainian officials said the large-scale attack also targeted a weapons production facility in Russia’s central Tambov region and an airfield in the occupied Crimean peninsula.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the military for what he framed as precision. “I thank our warriors for their precision,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the “plan for long-range sanctions is being implemented exactly as needed to bring peace closer.”

Kyiv has said its repeated strikes on Russia’s energy sector are aimed at denying Moscow export revenue used to support its war efforts. while also carrying psychological weight. A month earlier. Ukraine agreed not to attack near the Kremlin during the annual Victory Day parade overseen by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The timing has fed fresh scrutiny of Russia’s defenses. Ukraine’s ability to strike St. Petersburg during such a high-profile event has raised questions about Russian air defenses. At least one video shared on social media appears to show local police officers open fire with small arms at a Ukrainian drone.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum—often described as Russia’s version of Davos—was set to bring together roughly 20. 000 people. including business and government leaders. in St. Petersburg. Russia has hosted the SPIEF for decades. but many Western guests. including heads of state. stayed away after its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The flagship forum is also drawing international attention this year: President Donald Trump has sent a US delegation. and Putin is scheduled to speak on Friday.

The forum’s opening day also coincided with diplomatic comments on Ukraine’s momentum. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in Kyiv on Wednesday that Ukraine “is now so successful that Putin is only able to organize a 9th of May parade with an official presidential decree” by Zelenskyy. At a press conference alongside Zelenskyy. Rutte said Ukraine “is increasingly successful — both when it comes to the front line. but also when it comes to making sure you are able to take out some of the key capabilities and capacities of the Russians to continue with the war.”.

A month of prior restraint around major symbolic moments. followed by strikes that reach a Russian city hosting a premier economic gathering. is now part of how the episode is playing out on the ground and on satellite monitors alike. For Russia. the damaged infrastructure—an oil terminal tied to Baltic fuel exports and a warship connected to sanctioned-oil transport—arrives while the country is trying to project economic normalcy. For Ukraine, it is a reminder that even high-visibility events do not fully insulate critical assets.

By the time the images were captured on May 8, the message was visible in smoke, water jets, and charred metal—projected outward from St. Petersburg while the SPIEF opened and the next headline was already being scheduled for Friday’s presidential speech.

  1. They say Ukraine struck an oil terminal but I’m still like… how do we know it wasn’t Russia’s own people doing it for attention? Satellites can show fire but not who held the controller. Either way, Putin’s forum opening day getting hit is pretty on brand.

  2. Wait, the article says it was nearly 700 miles from the border so like that’s not even close and yet it’s “major.” 700 miles sounds like Texas to me. Also why would a ship be “shadow fleet” like is that a legal thing?? I’m confused but I guess drones do what they do.

  3. “Largest transshipment complexes” or whatever—does that mean it’s basically fueling Russia’s whole economy? If so then yeah, strike the oil stuff and the ships, good. But then they also show the corvette damaged and fire crews with water cannons like that’ll fix it. And this is happening during an economic forum so it’s like they’re trying to look nice while the cameras catch explosions, not a great look.
