Sandra Bullock says daughter told her to date ‘only someone where they can get stuff’ after partner Bryan Randall’s death
Sandra Bullock’s 12-year-old daughter, Laila, has clear opinions about whom her mother should date next.
Bullock, 62, shared the advice when she appeared on the September 3 episode of “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce.” She made a rare comment about her dating life, three years after the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall.
Laila has a plan for her mom’s next date
“She said I needed to date, but only someone where they can get stuff,” Bullock said.
“So I said, ‘What? A rapper? A basketball player? That’s the parameters?’” Bullock recalled. “She’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I went, ‘Oh.’”
Bullock also spoke about her children, stating, “I just lean into who they are. I’m like I meet them exactly where they are and I go, I’m getting something amazing. Even though I’m crying on the inside, I’m getting something amazing.”
Bullock’s relationship with Randall
Bullock has kept her personal life private since Randall died in August 2023 at age 57 after a secret three-year battle with ALS.
The couple began dating in 2015 after Randall, a photographer, was hired to photograph Bullock’s son Louis‘ birthday party. Together, they built a family, and Randall helped raise Bullock’s two adopted children, Louis, now 16, and Laila.
In a 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk, Bullock called Randall “the love of my life” and said she didn’t need marriage to prove their commitment.
“I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother,” she said at the time.
Bullock has kept family at the center
Since Randall’s death, Bullock has stepped back from the spotlight to focus on her children. She has now returned to acting with Practical Magic 2, her first major film role since her hiatus.
The sequel, which reunites her with Nicole Kidman, is set to hit theaters on September 10.
Bullock has emphasized that her children are her top priority. She told Kylie Kelce that she only accepts acting roles that accommodate her family’s needs.
“To me, being a mom is everything,” she said. “My job is great, [but] my kids are my everything. So if it doesn’t work for them and my time with them, I’m not doing it.”
Her children have watched her navigate loss
Bullock has also spoken publicly in recent weeks about how her children experienced Randall’s illness and death.
On the “SmartLess” podcast, she said her children were aware of Randall’s condition and described them as “very, very astute kids.”
She shared, “They could see. They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids. Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us.”
Bullock has also acknowledged that her grieving began before Randall died after his health deteriorated. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said on “SmartLess.”
