A year after “Stranger Things” ended at the beginning of 2026. Netflix is moving quickly to fill the sci-fi-shaped space it left behind.. The next play comes next week. with “The Boroughs” premiering on Thursday. May 21. and bringing an alternate familiar-feeling vibe—only with a major twist: the people at the heart of the mystery are all much older.
The series follows characters who live together in a senior-citizen community in New Mexico. where retirement is the supposed selling point.. What disrupts that picture is something strange. but because of their age. they’re brushed off when they try to warn others.. Some neighbors treat the complaints like ramblings of old men and women. even as the story keeps tightening around what’s really happening.
“The Boroughs” is tied to “Stranger Things” in more ways than just tone.. It comes from Upside Down Pictures, the company founded by the Duffer Brothers.. The same company has produced “Stranger Things. ” “Tales from ’85. ” and “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen.” While Matt and Ross Duffer don’t write this new series. they’re credited as executive producers. meaning they’re tied into the story’s creative direction.
At the center of “The Boroughs” is Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina). who arrives at the community and immediately doesn’t buy the utopia management is selling.. After he notices something peculiar, attempts to alert others go nowhere—they dismiss him.. Still, he forms friendships with neighbors, and the investigation grows from there.
Sam’s crew includes Renee (Geena Davis), Judy (Alfre Woodard), Wally (Denis O’Hare), Art (Clarke Peters), and Jack (Bill Pullman).. Together. they tackle what it means to be old while pushing into the darkness hidden behind the commune’s bright and shiny front.. The series blends science fiction. horror. and comedy as the group digs deeper into what everyone else seems determined to ignore.
The scheduling is clear: Netflix is bringing the first season’s eight episodes to subscribers on Thursday, May 21, and it will be available globally. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the showrunners.
Across the story as it’s laid out here. the same push-and-pull repeats: Sam Cooper arrives skeptical. he notices something off. and when he tries to tell people they brush him off—then his friendships with Renee. Judy. Wally. Art. and Jack turn those dismissed concerns into an investigation of the “darkness hidden behind the bright and shiny commune.”
