Ryan Fitzpatrick wears many different hats: Former NFL player, current NFL analyst, sometimes shirtless Buffalo Bills fan. There’s one hat that he maybe should not be wearing, however.
Celebrities, athletes and those from all walks of life were among the guests at the much-publicized Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding in July. Fitzpatrick and Hollywood titan Tom Hanks were among those in attendance.
As it turns out, Fitzpatrick and Hanks crossed paths at the wedding, but it may have been something of an awkward moment, according to the passer, and it revolved around his choice of headwear.
Fitzpatrick shared the story on a recent episode of “Fitz and Whit”:
“We went to the ‘Royal Wedding,’ I make eye contact with Tom Hanks,” Fitzpatrick said. “Bill Murray knows who I am, Tom’s gotta know who I am. (Hanks) makes eye contact, points at me, again, that magical 20-to-30 feet away, and he starts walking towards me. …
“And so I’m feeling pretty good, and I’m like, ‘Holy crap. How cool is this? My life is like – Tom Hanks knows who I am, he’s approaching me to talk to me.’ And they get closer and he looks at me and says, ‘Just so you know, that’s a huge faux pas, you’re not supposed to wear a top hat at a wedding. That’s saved for the groom.’ And then he just keeps walking.”
Fitzpatrick said he was unsure how serious Hanks was in his comment, adding that it was a 50-50 chance that Hanks was joking with him, and he wasn’t sure which.
Ultimately, he came to the realization that Hanks may not have known who he was.
“He has no idea who I am. I’m the guy that wore the top hat that was a huge faux pas at the wedding because that was reserved for the groom,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick’s unique sense of style is no surprise. In 2018, he donned a flashy tracksuit and set of chains from his teammates with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also sometimes chooses to go shirtless during the Amazon Prime postgame show, a different sort of fashion statement.
Suffice to say, he’ll likely keep the top hat in the closet for the next wedding he attends.
