Roy Keane says ‘nice, mature’ call with Bruno

Roy Keane has addressed a telephone conversation he shared with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The two recently became embroiled in a dispute stemming from comments the former Red Devils skipper made. Keane questioned the mentality of United’s squad after Fernandes set a new benchmark for most assists in a single Premier League campaign on the season’s final day against Brighton last month. Fernandes had an outstanding personal campaign with United, recording 21 Premier League assists and helping the club secure third place in the
table to clinch Champions League football. Nevertheless, the Portugal midfielder was distinctly unhappy with observations made by Keane, where the Old Trafford icon implied excessive attention was being given to the assist milestone. Speaking to Steven Bartlett last month, Fernandes remarked: “I don’t mind criticism. I always take criticism from everyone and never reply to anyone whatsoever. People have an opinion, they think it’s good, bad or whatever,” reports the Mirror . “What I don’t like is when people lie about things, and in this
case, what you said about Roy Keane, basically, what he said is a lie. Luckily for me everything is on record, imagine if it wasn’t, then people will think Bruno is always the guy going for the assist. “I even asked Ole his number to text him to have a word with him, to say ‘I don’t mind the criticism, I don’t like when people lie about the things that I say, because this goes over the top of the things I think are acceptable.”
Now, weeks later, Keane has revealed that he and the United skipper have had a phone conversation. “I think there was a reaction to what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat,” Keane said on the latest episode of The Overlap podcast from Stick to Football . “I did, I called him and we had a lovely chat about a bit of everything really. “It was nice, when we do podcasts or games
and sometimes you think you say something afterward and you are trying to communicate something and it doesn’t come across properly and people get upset. “He wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation.” In light of Keane’s most recent remarks, it would seem that he and Fernandes have now buried the hatchet, with the United skipper poised to shift his focus towards representing Portugal at this summer’s World Cup.
