Calgarians at heart of Canada’s historic World Cup win

Canada eyes new milestone Another milestone is in sight next week with Canada poised to advance to the playoff rounds. MacTavish said he’s optimistic but not ready to forecast Canada’s fortunes. “I think I have so many scars from Canada soccer that I never assume we’re going to win, even though the odds people might do,” he said. Regardless of the home country’s fate, this World Cup experience will be long remembered by those who witnessed Canada’s historic win and later swallowed up in the

celebrations that followed. For Gutierrez, seeing the two sections of Qatari fans, most dressed in traditional long white thobes, brought back fond memories of the November 2022 tournament. “It did feel that you’re at a World Cup, watching Qatar, and it’s like this is definitely a flashback,” he said. “It’s almost like we’re back in Qatar.” He shared his air-conditioned shipping container with a fellow Voyageur from Ontario whom he’d never met but now considers a friend. “It was kind of like this big —

not risk — but you’re like alright, I’m flying halfway across the world to Qatar, and I’m staying in a sea can, with somebody I don’t know.” The reality was better than he imagined. “It was a phenomenal experience. It turned out to be way better than I expected.” So, too, might Canada’s World Cup run.

  1. I’m confused, is this about Canada soccer or like… that Qatar shipping container thing? Either way, flying across the world to sleep in a sea can sounds kinda wild. But I guess it was “historic” so whatever lol.

  2. “Scars from Canada soccer”?? That’s funny but also sad. I feel like they’ll choke in the playoffs like always, because Canada sports teams have cursed energy. Also the article says home country fate but then talks about Qatar fans, so I’m not sure what the actual point is.

  3. The best part was the Qatari fans in white thobes bringing back 2022 memories, like okay cool. But I thought Canada already won the World Cup? Or is this just they won something else and now they’re “poised” for playoffs next week? I’m pretty sure I saw a clip online that said Canada was basically guaranteed, so now this sounds like they’re not even assuming anything, which is confusing.
