Ron Rivera’s next stretch at Cal is no longer a question mark.
The former NFL head coach has signed a three-year deal to remain the general manager at Cal, putting him back at the center of the program he once belonged to as a player. Rivera was hired in 2025, and the contract is apparently retroactive to that same year. It runs through March 2028.
Rivera’s salary is set at $800. 000 per year. with the ability to double his pay based on the football program’s success. The structure is straightforward: he’ll maximize his compensation with 10 wins. In his role. Rivera will supervise the head coach and is also responsible for a buyout clause of $250. 000 if he leaves before the end of the 2026 season. He reports directly to the school’s chancellor.
The deal closes the door on an earlier moment that had floated around the coaching carousel. Earlier this year, Rivera interviewed for the Cardinals’ head coaching job, a reminder that his football career still carried options. But now, at least for the next three seasons, he’s staying put with Cal.
Rivera’s football résumé is built on the kind of experience that can carry weight in a university setting. He coached the Panthers from 2013 through 2019 and the Commanders from 2020 through 2023. In the NFL. he worked for 13 straight seasons as a head coach and won the NFL’s coach of the year award twice. Before that, he played for eight years, all in Chicago, and was a member of the legendary 1985 Bears defense. A second-round pick in 1984, Rivera entered coaching in 1997 after his playing career ended.
For Cal, the timing matters. A contract that spans through March 2028. with a clear performance target for Rivera’s pay. signals that the school wants continuity—and wants the football program to respond. For Rivera. it’s a return to the place that brought him back in 2025. now formalized with a multi-year commitment that keeps the focus on what comes next on the field.

So he’s just gonna sit there and make money? 10 wins sounds like a lot of pressure.
I don’t get why it says $800, 000 per year like that, is it $800k or $8k lol. Also if he reports to the chancellor does that mean the chancellor is gonna be calling plays?
Wait, buyout is $250, 000 if he leaves before 2026 but what about if the team sucks? Sounds like the school pays him either way. These contracts always sound weird.
This is why I don’t trust “continuity.” Cardinals wanted him and now he’s back at Cal like nothing happened. Retroactive to 2025 too? So they just decided back then he was staying? I’m confused but also go Bears I guess?
