Rolling Stones Reappear in 1970s AI Music Video

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood have been digitally de-aged into their late-’70s look for the Rolling Stones’ new single “In the Stars,” with the effect powered by Deep Voodoo, an AI company founded by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone

The Rolling Stones didn’t just return with a new single this week—they slipped back into the late 1970s.. In the music video for “In the Stars. ” Mick Jagger. Keith Richards. and Ronnie Wood appear de-aged into an older look that fans associate with the band’s most iconic era. rocking out in a warehouse while a crowd dances around them.

Odessa A’zion stars in the François Rousselet-directed video. and the performance turns playful at one point when she licks the digitally de-aged Mick Jagger’s face.. A’zion said it was “my dream. ” adding: “The first record that I ever got that I listened to from start to finish was Tattoo You.. I’m obsessed with the Rolling Stones.. This is in my bucket list for sure.”

Behind the de-aging is Deep Voodoo, the AI company created by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.. The credits for the music video list body doubles for Jagger. Richards. and Wood. while the Deep Voodoo side credits include an “AI data wrangler” plus deepfake artists for all three of the band members’ AIs.

Deep Voodoo’s work isn’t new in this space.. The company previously provided deepfake technology for Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5” video in 2022. which morphed the rapper’s face into O.J.. Simpson, Kanye West, and Kobe Bryant.. It also helped de-age Billie Joel in 2024’s “Turn the Lights Back On.”

Deep Voodoo executive Jennifer Howell told THR in an article published in March. “Our goal is to make beautiful. cinematic film and television that never pulls the viewer out because the effect doesn’t look right.” In “In the Stars. ” the results aim for that same kind of seamlessness. even as the deepfakes come with an unmistakable uncanny edge.

The video is part of a wider rollout for the Rolling Stones’ upcoming 25th album, Foreign Tongues, which the band revealed last week. Along with “In the Stars,” they released the album’s opening track “Rough and Twisted.” Foreign Tongues is set to arrive on July 10.
