When Gladiator II arrived, theatergoers didn’t quite fall in line. The sequel—directed by Ridley Scott and built for blockbuster scale—missed its moment at the box office. But on streaming, it has suddenly found traction.

Gladiator II has risen to the top spot on Paramount+’s global Top 10 list. positioning it as a current-time crowd favorite. On that same chart. viewers can also find Glen Powell’s The Running Man. Brad Pitt’s World War Z. Henry Cavill’s Night Hunter. and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick. among other titles.

The momentum on streaming matters because Gladiator II’s path hasn’t been straightforward. Scott originally delivered the iconic Gladiator in the 2000s. starring Russell Crowe as Maximus—an Oscar-winning performance that helped the film become a massive box-office hit. Gladiator grossed over $465 million worldwide and went on to win Oscars for Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. earning further nominations and accolades.

Two years ago. Scott tried to recreate that kind of cultural lightning with Gladiator II. bringing Paul Mescal in as the protagonist Lucius. The sequel’s story follows the grown son of Maximus. Lucius. who is forced into slavery and the Colosseum after Roman legions invade his home. Driven by vengeance, he rises as a gladiator to challenge Rome’s corrupt leadership.

For all that legacy and star power, Gladiator II didn’t excite theatergoers in the same way. It became a box-office flop, bringing in only $462.2 million on a $310 million budget. The audience split wasn’t a landslide. but it was real: critics gave it a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. while audiences awarded it an 80% rating.

What streaming viewers appear to be reacting to is a louder, spectacle-forward version of the gladiator myth. The action includes a moment described as flooding the Colosseum, and the film also features rhinos. On the performance front, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington are singled out among the cast for credible turns.

Gladiator II is now available on Paramount+, with its new audience pulling it to the top of the global charts—right as the franchise conversation that started with Gladiator decades ago continues to keep fans talking.

  1. So it flopped in theaters but now it’s #1 on Paramount+? Idk man streaming is where everyone goes when they don’t wanna pay for tickets.

  2. I heard something about rhinos?? Like why are there rhinos in Gladiator 2 😂 I guess people just wanna see chaos on the big screen even if it’s on a TV.

  3. Wait, when they say “top of Paramount+ global Top 10,” that means it’s the #1 movie worldwide right? Because I thought Paramount+ barely works in like half the country. Also Denzel being in it is the only reason I’d watch, not the whole Roman slavery thing.

  4. Critics 70% and audiences 80%… that’s like, almost the same number, so why is everyone acting surprised it did bad in theaters. Streaming momentum is probably just people rewatching because it’s a Ridley Scott movie and they’re trying to remember Gladiator from 2000. Also didn’t World War Z already have the “global charts” thing too? Seems like the same marketing loop.
