Rescue rush deepens in Venezuela as deaths surpass 900

Rescue teams kept pouring into Venezuela as the search went into its third day, but the rubble kept telling the same story: buildings flattened, hospitals damaged, and families waiting for any sign of life.

On June 27—days after a doublet of earthquakes struck on June 24—officials reported that the death toll had climbed above 900. with injuries reaching into the thousands. The earthquakes hit with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 within one minute of each other. unleashing immediate devastation across the country and leaving rescue workers facing a long. slow job of pulling survivors from collapsed homes and highrises.

In the Caracas capital region, the ground shook again on June 26. This time, a smaller quake of magnitude 4.7 struck shortly after 6 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

While responders searched, Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez said on June 26 she spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She said they “who reaffirmed the support of the United States government at this difficult moment for Venezuela.”
