Report: Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy out multiple weeks with ankle sprain

You can add injury to an already insulting pre-season for J.J. McCarthy.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback, who lost the starter’s role to Kyler Murray, will miss multiple weeks with an ankle sprain, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

McCarthy first sustained the injury in Week 2 of pre-season against the Baltimore Ravens before missing Minnesota’s finale against the Denver Broncos on Friday.

With McCarthy sidelined, veteran QB Carson Wentz will step into the No. 2 role behind Murray while Max Brosmer slots in as the Vikings’ third-stringer, per Schefter.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, completed 5 of 10 passes for 81 yards before being pulled against the Ravens.

After missing his rookie season with a torn meniscus in his right knee, the 23-year-old finally debuted for Minnesota last season, but struggled over 10 games, tossing 12 interceptions to 11 touchdowns.

Now, as one of four QBs on the Vikings’ initial 53-man roster, his future with the team could be in doubt.
