Overshown gets MIKE and green dot chance
Overshown gets – DeMarvion Overshown enters a contract year with the Dallas Cowboys ready to give him the MIKE middle linebacker role and the green dot, after injuries have limited him to 19 games in three seasons.
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted DeMarvion Overshown in the third round in 2023, they were chasing upside. That upside, though, has been delayed—because injuries have repeatedly gotten in the way.
Overshown has played only 19 games across three seasons. Still. this week he sounded like a player who’s finally being handed the kind of responsibility that changes how teammates and coaches see you. He’s aiming to be the defensive centerpiece: the one “everybody can look at and say ‘this is our guy; this is the guy that’s going to lead our defense to the next level.’”.
The Cowboys, despite his injury history, appear ready to make that bet. They’re planning to hand him the middle linebacker job along with the green dot—Dallas’s signal that the player has the responsibility to organize the defense.
Overshown said he’s been waiting for this moment since his rookie year. “I’ve been wanting to be MIKE for the longest, since my rookie year. I felt like it was going to come to a time where I wore the ‘C’ on my chest and I had the green dot. and now I’ve got it. I’m excited,” he said via Tommy Yarrish of the team website.
In the past, Overshown played weakside linebacker. This is different. He believes the middle linebacker role “fits me,” and he sees himself as an extension of new defensive coordinator Christian Parker on the field.
For Overshown, the timing is what makes the week feel heavy. He’s heading into a contract year that he knows he has to win—especially with his history limiting him. “It’s a big year for me,” he said. “We all know what year this is for me. it’s a contract year. and you give me the green dot. so I’ve got an opportunity to prove myself.”.
The Cowboys aren’t ignoring the math from his past. They’re using the green dot and the MIKE job as the next test—because if Overshown can stay on the field and run the defense the way he imagines, Dallas gets exactly what it was hoping to draft in 2023: a leader at the center of everything.
