Regina approves upgrades for Dewdney and Lewvan intersection
After years of being labelled Regina’s most accident-prone intersection, the City of Regina is moving forward with safety improvements at Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive, including protected dual-left turn lanes, better pedestrian lighting, and upgraded signal
A busy intersection in West Regina is finally getting a safety overhaul after years of being singled out as the city’s most accident-prone spot.
The junction of Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive has averaged 38 collisions per year, based on measurements over three years. Since 2010, at least 600 reported collisions have been recorded at the intersection.
Working closely with SGI, the City of Regina collected and tracked safety data on what was happening in and around the crossing. Because it sits where traffic is among the highest in the city, Regina issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) aimed at improving the intersection.
Chris Warren, the City of Regina director of roadways and transportation, said the project has been in the works for years. “We began the planning process many, many years ago for this project. We’ve designed the project to add protected dual-left turn lanes,” he said.
The planned improvements are not limited to turning lanes. Warren said the work will also include increased lighting for pedestrians, upgrades to signals, and improvements to accessibility. The city expects the project to take a year to complete.
While the infrastructure changes are moving forward, officials are also stressing personal responsibility behind the wheel. Drivers are being reminded to avoid distracted driving, to pay attention to pedestrians and other vehicles, and to stay vigilant to help prevent collisions.
The pattern in the numbers is stark: an average of 38 collisions per year over three years. alongside at least 600 reported collisions since 2010. led Regina to build a plan with SGI data and then move through an RFP for major upgrades—turning lanes. pedestrian lighting. signals. and accessibility—within a timeline of about a year.
MISRYOUM Canada News will continue to follow how the project progresses and what changes residents can expect at the intersection as construction begins and work is completed.
