Reese Witherspoon Breaks Down as Elle Cast Reunites

Reese Witherspoon teared up in Manhattan as the “Legally Blonde” cast reunited to celebrate the 25th anniversary and the upcoming prequel series “Elle,” sharing how playing Elle Woods has shaped her for 25 years.
Reese Witherspoon didn’t just step into the room—she felt herself get pulled right back into the moment she described as 25 years in the making.
At an event in Manhattan on Saturday promoting the upcoming prequel series “Elle. ” the “Legally Blonde” star grew emotional as the cast reunited in honor of the original film’s 25th anniversary. Standing before fans at Hall des Lumières. Witherspoon told the crowd. “Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life.”.
The reunion brought together Witherspoon and familiar faces from the 2001 comedy, including Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, Ali Larter, Matthew Davis, and Victor Garber.
As she spoke, Witherspoon made it clear the emotion wasn’t scripted. “When I walked in and I saw this moment. it just felt like it was galvanizing how I felt about playing this character — I’m gonna cry. Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life. ” she said. then paused as the meaning landed harder than she expected.
She also described what Elle Woods has meant to people beyond Hollywood. “People come up to me and they tell me stories about how they go to law school because of her or they named their daughter Elle or they overcame some incredible challenge in their life because she did that. ” Witherspoon said. “She went through this experience of feeling like everybody was looking down on her or judged her. and I don’t know a person on Earth who hasn’t felt like an underdog in some situation.”.

The new series is already in motion. In April 2025. Witherspoon shared a first look at “Elle. ” writing on Instagram alongside a photo showing a young Elle Woods played by Lexi Minetree. She also revealed Minetree’s casting earlier. in February 2025. saying. “Allow me to introduce you to the new Elle Woods!” In that post. Witherspoon explained that after watching auditions for the prequel series on Prime Video. the role went to Minetree—and she got to “break the news” herself.
Prime Video’s description frames the show as a deeper origin story: “’Elle’ follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first ‘Legally Blonde’ film.”
For Witherspoon, the reunion didn’t just mark a milestone—it reconnected the character’s legacy to the next chapter. And standing in Manhattan with the cast behind her, she let the obvious truth land: playing Elle Woods for 25 years hasn’t simply been her job. It’s been her ongoing privilege.

So she cried… cool cool.
Wait, is Elle Woods finally getting a prequel?? I feel like I missed something lol. Reese always seems so perfect but I guess not scripted is real.
I don’t get it, isn’t Elle Woods like, a lawyer already? How do they do a whole series in high school like it’s not gonna be the same vibe. Also the cast reunion already had me confused like I thought it was just for the movie 25 years ago.
Man, Reese tearing up always hits different. But also… Prime Video can’t seriously think high school origins are gonna outdo the courtroom stuff? I saw the part about naming daughters Elle and I’m like okay that’s sweet but I wanna know if the prequel is gonna have any real jokes or it’s just gonna be her getting judged the whole time. Anyway Hall des Lumières sounds fancy like they’re at some laser show lol.
