NEW YORK — Dansby Swanson’s go-ahead RBI triple landed like a jolt, and by the time the Cubs turned the nightcap into a 10-5 victory, the Mets were left chasing the kind of bounce that only comes from mistakes.

Chicago capped the sweep on Wednesday night with a doubleheader that ended up rewriting what the Mets could take away from the day. Swanson capped his own fireworks with four RBIs, after he powered the Cubs in the opener. In the 10-3 victory in Game 1. Swanson hit a three-run homer and a grand slam. finishing the day with 11 RBIs across the two games—an MLB franchise record. That total broke the mark of 10 RBIs that Hall of Famer Ron Santo set on July 6, 1970.

The series has been building toward this version of Swanson. He also homered on Tuesday night. and he entered Wednesday with three homers and 15 RBIs in the first three games of the series. The shortstop had just 14 RBIs in his previous 48 games entering Tuesday. a reminder of how quickly his production can flip from steady to overwhelming.

In the nightcap, Pedro Ramirez added two RBIs in the second game, while Carson Kelly, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw each drove in a run. On the mound, Shota Imanaga (5-6) surrendered four runs over 5 1/3 innings.

New York’s setbacks didn’t come only from the scoreboard. The Mets returned Francisco Lindor from the injured list for the nightcap. but Juan Soto missed both games because he was back. Still, the biggest swing for the Mets came in the field. New York committed six errors in the nightcap—two apiece by first baseman Mark Vientos and second baseman Marcus Semien. plus one each by Lindor and Bo Bichette.

That string of costly plays fed the mood around the club. The Mets, after the loss, ran their losing streak to five games and fell a season-high 12 games under .500. New York was last 12 games under on the final day of the 2023 season.

Francisco Alvarez offered a bright moment among the damage, launching one of the Mets’ four homers in Wednesday’s nightcap. He also punctuated his final at-bat by breaking his bat over his knee after a strikeout in the eighth. Vientos, Bichette and A.J. Ewing also went deep.

Brooks Raley (2-2) worked through the sixth but allowed two runs in that frame as the Cubs kept building.

With Thursday approaching. Chicago had a key storyline attached to the next matchup: Cubs LHP Matthew Boyd (2-1. 6.00 ERA) was expected to come off the injured list to start against Mets RHP Freddy Peralta (5-6. 4.83 ERA). The Mets will try to reset after a night when six errors did most of the work for their opponents.
