Google Home Speaker ships early—then power cable shocks

Google Home – A Reddit user claims they bought Google’s new Home Speaker early from a Walmart shelf and shared hands-on impressions, praising sound and setup—until they unboxed what they say is a permanently attached, non-removable USB-C power cable.

A Walmart shelf, a quick work trip, and a purchase that wasn’t supposed to happen yet—those are the ingredients behind a new Google Home Speaker story that’s quickly turned into a real-world worry for anyone who buys hardware for the long haul.

A Reddit user says they spotted the new Google Home Speaker while traveling for work and bought it before its wider availability. They say a store associate unknowingly sold them the device even though it appeared not to be scheduled for release.

Once the speaker arrived, the early unboxing footage and hands-on notes focused on two things: the sound and a design choice the buyer can’t stop thinking about.

The user’s biggest surprise isn’t the speaker’s appearance or audio performance—it’s the power cable. They claim the Google Home Speaker comes with a non-removable USB-C power cable that’s about 5 feet long. In their description. the cable connects to a removable 30W power brick. meaning the brick can be replaced. but the cable attached to the speaker cannot simply be unplugged and swapped out.

“Unfortunately, the biggest thing that stood out to me was the irremovable power cable,” the Redditor wrote, calling it a “nightmare for repairability.”

The unboxing video shows the attached cable, and the buyer says it doesn’t appear that there’s a standard USB-C port on the speaker itself. They add that even if the cable could be removed internally during repairs, that still wouldn’t be as consumer-friendly as a detachable cable.

What comes next in the hands-on impression is more encouraging. The buyer—who says they have experience with professional audio equipment—described the speaker’s sound quality as better than expected for its size. They pointed to solid midrange and low-frequency performance, while saying they preferred slightly boosting the treble in the audio settings.

They also say the speaker gets fairly loud and delivers enough audio quality that they plan to make it the main speaker in their living room.

On the controls and setup, the early owner highlights Google’s touch interface. They say the volume controls are indicated by hidden lights beneath the fabric mesh. Setup, they write, was straightforward, taking less than 10 minutes using an existing Google Home account.

The speaker’s physical design, though, also came with a second snag. Alongside the attached cable, the buyer says the fabric mesh covering feels somewhat loose compared to the hard body underneath. They note this may be specific to the single unit they received. but they also say it raises concerns about long-term durability and potential tearing.

For now, this is still just first impressions from one early owner. The bigger question hanging over the whole story is simple: if the speaker’s power cable can’t be replaced like a typical part. repairability becomes much harder than it looks at checkout—and that’s exactly why one Walmart encounter is already landing as a warning.
