Reds Place Elly De La Cruz on IL After Hamstring

Reds place – Elly De La Cruz was placed on the injured list on Monday, June 1, after an MRI revealed a right hamstring strain. The injury ends his run of 276 consecutive games played and forces the Cincinnati Reds to call up top prospect Edwin Arroyo from Class AAA Louisvi

Elly De La Cruz’s night didn’t end with a hit so much as a pause.

In the Reds-Braves series finale. the shortstop came through with a fifth-inning single. then pulled out of a sprint for what could have turned into extra bases. By Monday, the reason for that stop had a clear diagnosis. The Cincinnati Reds placed De La Cruz on the injured list with a strained hamstring.

The roster move came on Monday, June 1. De La Cruz suffered the injury in Sunday’s game, when he hit a booming fly ball off the outfield wall but could only limp to first base with a single.

After Sunday’s game, Reds manager Terry Francona described the moment with a mix of hope and urgency. “He feels like he caught it before it did anything worse,” Francona said after the game. “Saying that, we’re gonna get him scanned at nine in the morning and we’ll know more. … Let’s kind of hope. He’s a pretty miraculous kid. Let’s wait and see what happens.”.

An MRI delivered the decision the Reds had been waiting to hear. It revealed a right hamstring strain and resulted in a trip to the IL.

For De La Cruz, the impact is bigger than missing games. The injury will end his run of 276 consecutive games played, the third-longest active streak in the majors.

The Reds still need a shortstop replacement, and they’ve moved quickly to cover the opening. To take De La Cruz’s place on the active roster, the team is calling up top infield prospect Edwin Arroyo from Class AAA Louisville.

Arroyo, 22, has been productive in Triple-A this season, hitting .323/.383/.562 with 11 home runs and nine stolen bases in 53 games. His versatility has been shaped by the minors as well—he has played multiple positions to increase his ability to fit in wherever the club needs him.

But the Reds had a specific idea for this moment. Cincinnati had hoped Arroyo would come up to play alongside De La Cruz, not in place of him.

Reds general manager Brad Meador said the organization had reason to believe Arroyo was most prepared to play shortstop, which means the team will at least get a clearer look at him there while De La Cruz is out.

Those choices leave the Reds with one immediate priority: keep the lineup moving as the streak ends, and use the opportunity that follows the injury to learn more about how Arroyo handles a role that has been De La Cruz’s signature.

  1. So he got put on the IL because he limped to first? That’s like… literally what happens in baseball lol. Guessing it’s not too bad if they called him “miraculous kid” but still sucks.

  2. Wait, I thought he was suspended or something? Like I saw “reds place” and my brain went to roster drama. Also 276 games is insane, but if it’s just a hamstring strain why not keep him off for like 2 days instead of IL for the season.

  3. Edwin Arroyo called up from AAA like that fixes everything? I mean .323 is cool but shortstop is a big jump, especially replacing a guy on a streak like that. Hamstrings always linger too, so I’m nervous they’ll rush it. Why did he sprint at all if he felt it right away… smh.
