Red Sox: Roman Anthony placed on 10-day IL

Roman Anthony is sidelined with a sprained right wrist, and Boston recalled Mickey Gasper ahead of a key home series vs. Tampa Bay.

A sprained right wrist has forced Roman Anthony onto the injured list, and the Red Sox now face a crucial short-term test of their depth.

Misryoum reports that Boston placed the 21-year-old outfielder on the 10-day IL ahead of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.. The move comes after Anthony sustained the injury during his first at-bat of Monday’s game in Detroit. with the wrist remaining sore as he worked through a recovery plan.

Anthony returned to Boston to consult the team’s hand specialist. and interim manager Chad Tracy indicated that the organization did not see enough improvement to keep Anthony active.. Tracy said the decision reflects the practical reality of whether Boston is comfortable playing short-handed. after already doing so for multiple days.

In this context, the timing matters: a home series against a division opponent can swing momentum quickly, and roster flexibility becomes as valuable as player availability.

Anthony’s outlook is cautious but optimistic. He wore a brace on his hand and said he has not picked up a bat since Monday. The outfielder also expressed confidence that the injury is not expected to extend beyond the 10-day window, aiming to return immediately once his stint is completed.

While the wrist issue is the headline. it also adds pressure to a Red Sox lineup that has seen Anthony start slowly at the plate.. Misryoum notes he is hitting .229 with one home run through 130 plate appearances this season. and the hope is that improved health will translate into sharper timing and more consistent at-bats.

This is also not the first time Anthony has dealt with a significant setback. He previously spent time on the IL last year due to an oblique strain, missing much of September and the team’s wild-card playoff run against the New York Yankees.

With Anthony sidelined, Boston recalled Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot on the roster. That move signals how quickly the Red Sox are adjusting, with Gasper now tasked with providing reliable innings while Anthony focuses on getting back to full strength.

For Boston, this IL placement is less about the immediate injury label and more about the broader rhythm of the season. If Anthony returns on schedule, the damage can be limited; if not, every lineup decision from here will carry extra weight.
