Red Hood confirmed as Dynamic Duo readies 2028 release

DC Studios is gearing up to drop Dynamic Duo in theaters on June 30, 2028, with Arthur Mintz directing a Batman-adjacent story built around Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. New footage shown at the Annecy Film Festival confirms an unusual, puppet-forward animation
The countdown to a new kind of Batman-adjacent movie is starting in earnest. DC Studios has now confirmed that Dynamic Duo—an on-screen take on the origins of the first Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd—will arrive in theaters on June 30, 2028.
The project is being shaped by Arthur Mintz, who has been tapped to direct. The script is credited to Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter, and Michael H. Weber. Dynamic Duo is being produced in partnership with DC Studios and 6th & IDaho. with the film reimagining the story and form through a “groundbreaking fusion of puppetry. practical effects. and cutting-edge technology” from Swaybox Studios.
For fans who have been waiting to see how DC will translate this era of the Robins, there’s a fresh answer—at least in glimpses. The first footage was shown at the Annecy Film Festival in France, where Collider’s Steve Weintraub attended a DC Studios panel.
That footage doesn’t just confirm the film’s title, Dynamic Duo. It also signals that this won’t be a traditional digital animation experience. The movie is described as leaning more into puppets than digital animation. and it has even been compared to the Spider-Verse films—not because of any shared animation style. but because the pitch is that it’s so original there isn’t much to compare it to.
It gets more pointed where the story turns personal. A version of Red Hood inspired by the Killing Joke comic will also appear in the film.
Meanwhile, the character dynamics are being set up for a dramatic fork in the road. Both Dick and Grayson will be 15 years old. The story centers around Dick teaming up with Batman to save his best friend. and at the end of the film. “one of them will choose Red Hood and the other will choose Batman. ” sending them down “wildly different paths.”.
The timing of this movie also matters in the wider DCU rollout. DC Studios has had a quieter stretch in 2026 so far. but later this month it’s expected to launch its next feature film. Supergirl—starring Milly Alcock. who debuted in Superman last year. Supergirl also features Jason Momoa as Lobo and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills.
On the small-screen side. the HBO original series Lanterns—starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan—is coming on August 16. Pierre is also confirmed to reprise his role as John Stewart in the 2027 DC tentpole Man of Tomorrow. led by David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
And while there is another Batman movie in the works at the DCU—different from The Batman Part II. which is currently shooting under director Matt Reeves—Dynamic Duo is the clearer theatrical target: June 30. 2028. With Mintz directing and the production leaning hard into puppets. practical effects. and Swaybox Studios’ technology. the film is shaping up to be a very specific kind of Batman-era story—one where childhood friendships collide with future identities. and where choosing Red Hood or choosing Batman becomes the split that defines everything after.
