Postgame updates clarified the situation surrounding Baker’s exit. The Rays determined that illness and dehydration caused his struggles rather than an arm or structural issue. Baker had been sick for several days before becoming dehydrated during the outing.
Tyler Wells replaced the right-handed reliever with two runners aboard. Jake Burger scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Elias Diaz, trimming the Rays’ lead to 1, before Wells closed out the victory for his sixth save of the season.
Baker entered Friday with a 1.47 ERA and 0.89 WHIP after converting 28 consecutive save opportunities dating to May 13. The outing moved his ERA to 1.64 and his WHIP to 0.93 across 58 appearances.
