Raq returns as Kanan vows a brutal final war

Raq returns – The first Season 5 trailer for “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” cuts straight to the fallout from the Season 4 finale: Raq Thomas is alive, but the alliance Kanan forms with Breeze comes with enemies, tough choices, and a promise of a reckoning before the serie

The question at the heart of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” has been hanging over fans since the Season 4 finale cliffhanger: did Kanan Stark kill his mother, Raq Thomas?

The new Season 5 trailer answers it quickly.

Raq is back.

The trailer. which arrives as Starz prepares the fifth and final season of its hit crime drama. opens with Kanan Stark’s voiceover warning of what’s coming: “If you didn’t hate me before. you’re gonna hate me now.” Then the story shifts into a rush of competing loyalties—Kanan teaming up with Breeze (Shameik Moore). and aligning with Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods). Breeze’s aunt and uncle.

Raq may have survived, but the trailer makes it clear that survival doesn’t mean safety. “While Raq did survive. there are plenty of people who want her dead and gone. ” the trailer’s momentum suggests—because the stakes aren’t just about whether she’s alive. They’re about whether she can stay that way.

Raq herself steps into the frame with a warning that lands like a dare: “You ain’t never have an enemy like me. Kanan.” Kanan’s reply is immediate and personal—“I’ve had you as an enemy my whole life.”—as if the final season isn’t merely closing a chapter. It’s turning old fights into something closer to destiny.

The trailer also includes a conversation between Kanan and Stefano Marchetti (Tony Danza). where they discuss how “things with her could get messy.” A photo of Raq flashes in the sequence. implying they’re talking about her—though the line also leaves room for the uncomfortable possibility that “her” could mean someone else.

Either way, the exchange follows the same direction. Kanan tells Marchetti, “Do what you gotta do.” Marchetti answers, “I plan on it.”

That blunt exchange sits beside another thread the trailer keeps threading through the chaos: the series’ official storyline makes clear this isn’t about a simple return to the way things were. Over the last four seasons. Kanan’s journey has been built on ambition. betrayal. and relentless attempts to escape his mother’s shadow. He once looked up to Raq and tried to join her empire. only to learn “the truth about who she really was and the secrets she was hiding from him.”.

Forced to confront that web of lies, Kanan faced what the official season description calls an “existential crisis of self-discovery,” then emerged “stronger and more resolute than ever.” He embraces his true self and breaks free from Raq’s influence, but still can’t “let her crimes go unanswered.”

In Season 5, the official storyline says Kanan’s ruthlessness takes shape. He knows who he is and who he must become to defeat his enemies. The relationship with Raq reaches “a point of no return,” with reconciliation described as “a distant memory,” making war inevitable. Kanan is positioned to solidify his place in the Queens drug game alongside Breeze. with their alliance setting up a reckoning meant to ripple through “every player in this dangerous business.”.

The season is also framed as a wider collision of power and consequence. “Many sacrifices will be made. ” including the Thomas family facing the collapse of their reign. Unique (Joey Bada$$) fighting to preserve his legacy. and the Mafia maneuvering behind the scenes. Still, the storyline’s message is stark: nothing stands in the way of Kanan’s pursuit of power.

Through all of it runs the trailer’s core promise—this isn’t the end for Kanan Stark. It’s just the beginning.

Raising Kanan premieres on Friday, June 12, with new episodes streaming weekly on Fridays via Starz.

Even as this final season pushes toward a reckoning, the franchise’s next step is already mapped out. It has been confirmed that Curtis is part of the “Power: Origins” cast. joining young Ghost (Spence Moore II) and Tommy (Charlie Mann). both described as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise in New York City. And for viewers wondering how far Kanan’s story stretches beyond this prequel era. there’s already a reassuring piece of continuity: it’s at least confirmed that Kanan lives well into the original “Power” series. where he was played by Jackson.
