Raiders weigh Diggs, Hill, Samuel after Mendoza pick

The Raiders are already looking past last month’s draft room, toward September football and the quarterback they just added with the No. 1 pick out of Indiana: Fernando Mendoza.
Las Vegas is gearing up for the 2026 NFL season, which is slated to get underway in September, and the team’s goal is clear—get into contention this year. The problem is simple and visible. The Raiders don’t have much depth in their wide receiver room, which is led by Tre Tucker.
That gap is where Adam Schefter’s comments landed—right on the part of the roster that needs a boost.
“Stefon Diggs, Deebo Samuel, Tyreek Hill. … There are a lot of high-profile wide receivers on the street,” Schefter said, per NFL on ESPN on X, formerly Twitter. In other words, if Las Vegas wants to sharpen the passing attack for Mendoza, the market is carrying familiar names.
Diggs has been one of the headline targets. He was the No. 1 receiver for the Super Bowl-bound New England Patriots this past year before being let go by the team at the end of the season. And while Diggs has recently faced an off-field cloud—he has since been found not guilty of assaulting his personal chef—Schefter’s point is that the case leaves potential suitors without that specific concern to weigh.
Tyreek Hill and Deebo Samuel bring a different kind of appeal: veteran production with established track records. each capable of carving out a meaningful role. Both are described here as solid veterans who could theoretically do that in Las Vegas. giving the Raiders the downfield punch they’re trying to add for Mendoza.
Even with that, the Raiders aren’t starting from zero at receiving. They do have a quasi-wide receiver in tight end Brock Bowers. who has already emerged as a Pro Bowl-level talent at the NFL level. Still. Las Vegas would like at least one more downfield threat—someone to stretch defenses and give Mendoza another option beyond what Bowers can provide.
The quarterback question adds another layer to what happens next. At this point. it’s unclear if Mendoza or veteran Kirk Cousins. who signed with Las Vegas in free agency. will be the Raiders’ Week One starter. It doesn’t appear—at least in the way this situation is framed—that the decision will drag on for long. as the No. 1 overall pick would be expected to take the reins sooner rather than later.
What connects all of it is the timing: Mendoza’s arrival as the centerpiece. the Raiders’ thin wide receiver depth behind Tre Tucker. and the sudden possibility that high-profile targets like Diggs. Samuel and Hill are within reach as Las Vegas prepares for a September that could define the direction of the franchise’s push.
