QVC Hosts Seek SAG-AFTRA Recognition Amid AI Fears

QVC hosts say their push to unionize with SAG-AFTRA is driven by concerns about generative AI—specifically worries about the use of their image, voice, and likeness without consent or fair pay—while SAG-AFTRA urges QVC management to recognize the union and beg
QVC hosts are asking to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA, and their central worry isn’t subtle: generative AI and what it could mean for their image, voice, and day-to-day work.
SAG-AFTRA is trying to represent all 32 hosts at the network. In a statement. the union said the hosts’ petition is rooted in concerns about artificial intelligence. particularly the use of hosts’ image. voice and likeness “without informed consent or fair compensation.” The petition also calls for “greater transparency and equity in compensation. ” “clearer standards for career advancement. ” “a stronger voice in decisions affecting their work. ” and “greater job security as AI continues to reshape the industry.”.
In that same filing, the hosts argued that they should have real input into QVC’s future. “We believe we should have meaningful input into our role in the network’s future, and that this is best accomplished through a formal collective-bargaining process,” their petition stated.
The petition asks QVC Inc. management to voluntarily recognize the union based on demonstrated supermajority support and to start bargaining in good faith. SAG-AFTRA added that it’s encouraging QVC management to avoid “a costly NLRB process” and voluntarily recognize the union.
QVC’s response was measured. A spokesperson for QVC Group told THR. “Our hosts are deeply valued team members and an important part of what makes QVC special. ” adding. “we respect the legal rights of all team members and are committed to following the appropriate process thoughtfully and responsibly.”.
The push comes after QVC hosts left the network last year, underscoring how quickly the question of working conditions—and control over how their likeness is used—can shift in a changing media landscape.
