Quarry Fire grows again as Well Fire spreads

Smoke carried over parts of west Miami-Dade as firefighters battled two wildfires moving through the area near the Quarry Fire and sending warnings to nearby communities.

The Quarry Fire, burning in west Miami-Dade County near NW 137 Ave. and NW 41 St., had consumed more than 5,000 acres since it started on Monday. By 8:19 a.m. on June 17. the Quarry Fire had grown to 5. 300 acres and was 30% contained. according to a map of active wildfires provided by the Florida Forest Service. The pace was faster late into the weekend: at 12:40 a.m. on June 16, the wildfire had burned 600 acres.

A second wildfire, the Well Fire, began on Tuesday and was also located in west Miami-Dade County. It is reported near NW 122 Ave. and NW 58 St., and had grown to 500 acres as of June 16 at 9:18 p.m., with containment at 25%.

Suppression efforts were underway with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) and the Florida Forest Service. An MDFR social media post also said that “additional aerial resources” from Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service “assisted with water drop operations.”

For residents in nearby communities, the risk wasn’t only the flames. MDFR warned that plumes of smoke could affect surrounding areas, recommending people limit time outside if smoke is present. The organization urged residents to keep all entrances to their home sealed and. if they have air conditioning. set the system to recirculate indoor air.

MDFR said the precautions are especially important for people with respiratory conditions. The smoke could also bring dangerous driving conditions by reducing visibility. If motorists “absolutely have to drive through smoke or haze. ” MDFR asked them to use extra caution. increase their following distance and use low-beam headlights.

Power outages or surges were also listed among the potential hazards in the area. MDFR said the risk of outages or surges could occur “to ensure the safety of responders and surrounding communities.” Anyone impacted was directed to contact Florida Power & Light via phone call or the company’s mobile app.

As both fires burn, crews continue suppression work while MDFR focuses on keeping people safer where smoke, visibility and power disruptions may reach first.
