Qatar Airways resumes Philadelphia flights from Aug. 1

Qatar Airways will launch daily flights between Doha and Philadelphia International Airport starting Aug. 1, using an Airbus A350-900 with QSuite and Starlink. The move replaces American Airlines on the PHL–DOH route after American suspended service in March d

On Aug. 1, Philadelphia gets a daily link to Doha again—one that reaches far beyond a timetable. Qatar Airways is set to begin service to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) from its base at Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH), with flights operating daily.

The aircraft will be the Airbus A350-900, configured with 36 lie-flat QSuite business class seats. Qatar Airways will also bring high-speed Starlink inflight connectivity aboard the route.

For Philadelphia travelers and businesses used to looking west to the U.S. for connections—and then back across the Atlantic when schedules allow—this is a swap with real consequences. Qatar replaces partner American Airlines on the PHL–DOH route.

American Airlines suspended flights in March after the outbreak of the Iran war and has confirmed it will not resume service on this route. Qatar’s comeback to Philadelphia comes as the region’s airline capacity is still under pressure. leaving passengers to navigate fewer options than they had before.

PHL’s chief commercial officer, Kate Sullivan, wrote on LinkedIn that the route’s “return means so much more than just a flight — it restores a vital global connection for our region’s businesses, leisure travelers, and families connecting with loved ones worldwide.”

Qatar previously served PHL from 2013 until 2023, when it dropped flights in favor of services operated by American, according to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

The timing matters. Gulf carriers have been forced to adjust as the Iran war pushed many airlines to suspend flights between the region and the rest of the world. While some services have resumed, capacity into the region remains restricted. Cirium schedules show seats on Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar to the U.S. are down 8% in June compared with a year ago. Qatar’s decline is the steepest. with seats down nearly 23% despite the airline having resumed flights to all 11 of its U.S. destinations.

On the demand side, the global airline trade group IATA estimates passenger traffic through the Middle East will be down roughly 11% this year compared with 2025.

Even with the broader slowdown, the Philadelphia-to-Doha route is expected to matter to passengers loyal to big airline programs. Qatar’s return to PHL will allow members of American’s AAdvantage loyalty program. Qatar’s Privilege Club. and all Oneworld member airline programs to earn and redeem points on the route.

PHL is American’s fifth-largest hub by flights and sixth-largest by seats, and the airport has long served as a key transatlantic gateway for the carrier—meaning this connection shift will be felt in the kinds of journeys people make, and how easily they can make them.

  1. I don’t get it, Qatar is taking over the American route but flights are still fine? Like isn’t this related to that Iran war thing? Seems weird timing.

  2. Wait, so American suspended in March, because of the Iran war, and then Qatar just swoops in Aug 1. Doesn’t that mean Americans can’t fly to Doha anymore? Also Starlink on the plane sounds like a gimmick tbh.

  3. PHL finally gets Doha back… but only daily and with a fancy A350? People will still have to connect somehow, right? I saw something about 36 lie-flat seats and thought that’s for like VIP only. Also “restores global connection” lol okay but what about cheaper tickets?
