Qantas flight diverted to Tahiti after passenger rampage

Qantas flight – Fresh witness accounts describe how a Qantas passenger’s mid-flight behaviour on the 18-hour Melbourne to Dallas route escalated into a diversion to Tahiti for police to arrest him. The man was later banned from flying on Qantas Group aircraft.

A Qantas passenger’s behaviour on a long-haul flight from Melbourne to Dallas quickly turned into a cabin confrontation—so severe that the flight was forced to divert to Tahiti to allow local police to arrest and jail him.

The passenger. a New Zealander on the 18-hour QF21 trip. had been travelling when his unruly conduct sparked tense exchanges with air crew and other passengers.. The situation escalated to the point where QF21 changed route and landed in Tahiti. with officers on board after the aircraft touched down in Papeete.

American comedian Mike Goldstein. who was travelling towards New York but missed two connecting flights because of the diversion. captured part of the incident on video.. In the footage. Goldstein can be seen reacting as the passenger was confronted in the cabin. where the language used by the man drew particular attention.

Goldstein said the confrontation began when a passenger seated in front lowered their seatback about four hours into the flight. “It woke him up, and he wasn’t happy about it – that’s what started the confrontation,” Goldstein told the Daily Mail.

Before the confrontation intensified, the man was warned to stop swearing because there were young children in the area.. One member of the air crew later admonished him for his tone. telling him. “Behave yourself. there are kids everywhere. ” before he allegedly asked whether the crew member was “smoking weed”.

As the exchange continued. the passenger could be heard swearing loudly while an attendant attempted to escort him back to his seat.. The flight attendant warned: “Watch your language…. You’re carrying on like a bloody two-bob watch. ” and a second Qantas staffer stepped in to restrain him physically and move him to sit at the back of the plane.

The passenger responded, “I was just taking a p***.” Goldstein also described how the man was then restrained by several men at the back of the aircraft for two hours until the diversion to Tahiti. After landing, he was escorted off by local law enforcement.

Witnesses said passengers were left frustrated by the combination of an already delayed departure and the unscheduled stopover.. Goldstein said no one felt unsafe during the flight, but added that the disruption was “annoying”.. He also said they waited on the tarmac in Tahiti “because there was a problem with the paperwork. ” describing the ordeal as “brutal”.

The incident did not end on the ground in Papeete.. Qantas said the aircraft was refuelled and customers continued on to Dallas, arriving Saturday morning.. The company also issued a no-fly ban on Qantas Group aircraft, including Jetstar flights.. A Qantas spokesman said: “The safety of our customers and our crew is our number one priority and we have zero tolerance for disruptive or threatening behaviour on our flights. ” adding: “We’re grateful to our crew and other passengers who assisted during the incident.”

A close friend of the passenger said his behaviour was “completely out of character” and suggested he may have taken sleeping pills and then had something like alcohol before being woken up.. “I can only think he took sleeping pills to sleep on the flight.. Maybe washed it down with some beers.. And got woken up and didn’t know where he was,” the friend said.

The friend said the man appeared to understand the global attention surrounding the incident, pointing to social media posts and a subsequent deletion. “He posted (on social media) that he was heading to Dallas, and he’s since deleted it. So he clearly knows what’s happened,” they said.

The friend added: “He’s the type of person who will take responsibility for his actions.. And he doesn’t need any more backlash.. He’s been through enough.” They said they were shocked by the viral footage, saying: “I’ve never seen him like that.. Ever.. It was quite alarming when I saw him on the nightly news.”

Goldstein also said the cabin remained broadly united in frustration at the disruption, rather than fear. “No one was in fear of it. Everyone was sort of united in their [frustration] with the guy,” he told the Daily Mail on Monday after arriving jet-lagged in New York.

The sequence of events described by witnesses follows a clear chain: a four-hour mark seatback adjustment woke the passenger. the cabin confrontation grew after repeated warnings about swearing around children. and once crew tried to move him to the back. the situation reached the point where police were brought in during the Tahiti diversion.

Qantas Group’s response came quickly after the arrest process in Tahiti. with the passenger issued a no-fly ban on Qantas Group aircraft.. For those on board. the impact was immediate—delays out of Melbourne. an overnight disruption in Papeete. and missed connections—while the video captured by Goldstein continued to circulate widely after the flight’s arrival in New York.
