Power bank in checked baggage derails easyJet flight to Luton

An easyJet flight from Hurghada to Luton was diverted to Rome after a power bank in a passenger’s checked baggage was found to be charging, forcing hotel accommodation and meals for affected travelers.

A summer trip planned around an arrival in Luton turned into an emergency landing in Rome when crew members spotted that a power bank in checked baggage was charging.

The easyJet flight that departed from Hurghada, Egypt on May 19 was headed to Luton in Bedfordshire, England, when the route changed after the crew was informed about the device in the hold, the airline said. Instead of continuing to the U.K., the aircraft rerouted to Rome.

The reason was straightforward but unforgiving: power banks are permitted in carry-on luggage. but not in checked baggage under U.K. Civil Aviation Authority rules. easyJet’s own policy also goes further once travelers are onboard. The airline prohibits customers from using power banks during the flight, including to charge other devices, according to its website.

After the aircraft landed safely, passengers disembarked routinely, easyJet said. The airline also said it provided hotel accommodation and meals where available and arranged refreshments for customers who stayed in the airport. The flight was rescheduled for the next morning.

“The safety of its customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers’ guidelines,” the airline said in an emailed statement.

The diversion came as airlines have tightened rules on portable power packs amid ongoing concerns about fire risk. American Airlines began requiring in May that flyers keep the devices visible when in use. adding limits on the number of devices passengers can bring and the devices’ watt-hour capacity. The move followed similar changes from United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

The sequence of policy tightening and operational disruptions has become a common thread for travelers trying to balance convenience with compliance: a device allowed in one part of the trip becomes a hazard in another. In this case. the difference between carry-on and checked baggage was the line that determined whether a flight proceeds as planned—or ends up rerouted mid-journey.

For passengers heading out this summer, the underlying message is now being enforced with more than signage at check-in. A power bank placed in checked luggage can turn a routine itinerary into a delay with real costs—time in an unfamiliar airport. hotel stays arranged by the airline. and a flight that has to wait until the next morning.
