Potato chips recalled over Colombian pork

More than 200 pounds of potato chips have been recalled because they contain pork from Colombia.

El Eden Import Distributor recalled packages of De Todito mixed with chicharrón, also known as pork crackling, that was sent to a distributor in New Jersey and retail locations in New Jersey and Utah.

Approximately 264 pounds of “De Todito NATURAL” and “De Todito BBQ” mixed chips sold in 45-gram bags are covered under the recall, according to a Sept. 9 announcement from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Colombia is ineligible to import any meat or poultry product into the United States, according to the announcement. The problem was discovered after a customer alerted FSIS to the banned pork.

Here’s what you need to know about the De Todito recall.

Colombian pork recall: What to know

The following products are covered under the recall:

  • 45-g. foil bags of “De Todito NATURAL” mixed chips with “CHICHARRÓN AMERICANO JACKS,” “Margarita,” and “NATU CHIPS.”
  • 45-g. foil bags of “De Todito BBQ” mixed chips with “CHICHARRÓN AMERICANO JACKS,” “Margarita,” and “NatuChips.”

The recall covers approximately 261 packages of chips. The recalled chips do not bear any import marks on the labels.

It has been classified a “Class I” recall by FSIS, its highest classification, meaning the regulator believes there is a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury due to consumption of the chips, however, FSIS advises that they be thrown away.
