Points and miles can tame Universal vacation costs

use points – Universal vacations pile up fast—from hotel rooms to skip-the-line passes and souvenirs. A new wave of options across major loyalty programs can help travelers stretch Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, a

The moment families start pricing out Universal Orlando. the math gets brutal: park tickets. hotel rooms. skip-the-line passes. and the souvenirs that somehow end up in every travel bag. The good news is that there are more ways than ever to chip away at the bill with points and miles—especially when you book the right kind of stay.

At Universal Orlando Resort, the hotel choice can determine whether you get Universal Express Unlimited as part of the reservation. Universal Orlando has four Signature Collection hotels: Loews Royal Pacific Resort. the Hard Rock Hotel Orlando. Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. and Universal Helios Grand Hotel. Reservations at Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay include Universal Express Unlimited, Universal Orlando’s skip-the-line pass. That means travelers who want the pass should do the math to see if staying in one of these properties saves money—or at least helps them break even.

Helios Grand is different. It’s the newest hotel, located inside the new Universal Epic Universe theme park, and it doesn’t come with Universal Express. The trade-off is that staying there is still positioned as worthwhile for theme park views and proximity.

If you’re looking at the lower tiers of Universal Orlando hotels, the strategy shifts. Those options don’t include Universal Express Unlimited passes. but they do offer early access to select Universal theme parks each day. That early entry can put popular areas like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter within reach before crowds get heavy.

There are also family-friendly value options on the Orlando side. Universal Endless Summer Resort’s Dockside and Surfside properties, and Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort, offer roomy two-bedroom suites, with pricing described as budget-friendly.

Universal Studios Hollywood brings its own twist. As of now, there are no on-site hotels at Universal Studios Hollywood. Still, there are “a handful of points hotels within walking distance,” giving travelers a way to stay close without paying full price at the gates.

And then there’s Texas. Universal Kids Resort has opened in Frisco, Texas, and it includes an on-site hotel. But the key detail is access: it’s currently only available through the Amex Travel portal. Because it’s newly opened, it could become available through other booking portals in the near future.

image

Several major loyalty ecosystems make this possible, but not all points stretch the same way.

With Chase Ultimate Rewards points, travelers can book Universal hotels through the Chase Travel℠ portal. The article notes that value depends on your card. The highest value comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. where points are worth up to 2 cents each toward booking travel. depending on the specific redemption. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card are listed as slightly lower. with up to 1.5 cents per point on select hotels. The Chase Freedom Flex® is listed as 1 cent per point.

image

There’s an additional move for people who hold Sapphire Reserve: you can transfer points earned on other Chase Ultimate Rewards cards—like the Freedom Flex—to your Sapphire Reserve account, and then redeem them at up to 2 cents each, depending on the specific redemption.

Pricing also varies by date. On a test date in mid-September, Universal Orlando hotels ranged from 21,038 to 86,962 Ultimate Rewards points per night for a user with the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

image

Chase points can also be used for tickets. The same Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood park tickets can be purchased through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. with the article saying you’ll get the same redemption rates as you would when booking hotels through the Ultimate Rewards portal. If tickets are available. they show up in the “Activities” section of the travel portal—search for “Orlando. ” enter dates. and ticket options populate in the results.

Citi ThankYou Rewards works similarly for hotel bookings through the Citi travel portal. The article says most Universal Orlando hotels can be booked there. but ticket and redemption value are different: Citi is listed as offering 1 cent per point. As of June 2026. it says the valuation for ThankYou Rewards points is higher than that. so travelers may want to compare Citi options against other redemption paths.

image

Citi card benefits can also change the equation. If you have the Citi Strata Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants). the article lists annual cardholder benefits at Universal hotels and those nearby. Premier cardholders can get $100 off a hotel reservation of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees), available once per year. Prestige cardholders can get a fourth night free on stays of four or more nights, available twice a year. Both benefits require booking in the Citi Travel portal.

The Citi Prestige section includes a specific note: the information for Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy, and the card details on that page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

image

Then there’s American Express Membership Rewards. which covers Universal Orlando’s on-site hotels through the American Express Travel® portal using either cash or points. Cash pricing is described as typically the same as booking directly with Universal. The upside for Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders is earnings: the article states you can earn 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on prepaid hotels booked through the American Express Travel portal.

Universal hotels—including the one at the new Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas—are described as bookable through Amex Travel.

image

Amex perks can go beyond points. The article points to the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program. It names Loews Portofino Bay Hotel as one of three hotels that offer complimentary Universal Express Unlimited passes and says it’s bookable through Fine Hotels + Resorts for travelers with the Amex Platinum or Amex Business Platinum.

When booking Loews Portofino Bay Hotel through Fine Hotels + Resorts. the article lists: Universal Express Unlimited passes for everyone staying in the room. a room upgrade (based on availability). daily complimentary breakfast for two. free Wi-Fi. early check-in (if available). late checkout. and a $100 food-and-beverage credit per stay.

image

It also lists a separate Amex benefit: as an Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card holder. you’ll get up to $600 annually (distributed as up to $300 in biannual hotel statement credits) when paying for your stay with your Amex card. The stated purpose is that these perks can offset the lower redemption value.

Capital One miles offer another route. The article lays out multiple options: book a Universal vacation package (lodging included) with a Capital One Venture card and use miles to cover the charge at 1 cent per mile. It also says you can book Universal Orlando hotels through Capital One Travel using cash or miles. earning up to 10 miles per dollar spent (depending on the card used) if you pay with cash and still use miles to cover the charge after it appears on your statement.

image

There’s a warning built in: travelers should check rates on Capital One Travel versus other online travel agencies and booking directly, since price disparities can exist.

This matters particularly for hotels that offer Universal Express Unlimited passes. because the article says those passes can be very pricey. While park tickets are still required. getting Universal Express Unlimited included with a hotel room is framed as a way to save money. For premium cardholders like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. the article says you can use a $300 annual travel credit to offset some of the cost of a Universal hotel booked through Capital One Travel.

image

It also mentions a workaround involving third-party theme park ticket sites like Undercover Tourist: if tickets are purchased through one of these companies and the transaction codes as a travel purchase, you could use miles to remove the transaction from your statement.

Universal Rewards adds yet another layer. and it’s aimed at people who want to earn points directly through card spend on Universal-related purchases. The article says there are two Universal Rewards credit cards: the no-annual-fee Universal Rewards Plus Visa Signature® Card earns 2 points per dollar on qualifying Universal purchases and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases; the $99-annual-fee Universal Rewards Plus Visa Signature® Card earns 4 points per dollar on qualifying Universal purchases. 2 points per dollar on travel. gas and dining purchases. and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. among other perks. Points can be added to a Universal FUNds prepaid card to cover eligible Universal purchases.

image

The value focus here is more in-park than it is in raw redemption: the article says both cards come with access to perks like 10% off select merchandise and food and beverage purchases at Universal theme parks, and a welcome bonus statement credit for new cardholders.

If you’re staying off-site but want to keep points in play, the article suggests several nearby hotels for different loyalty programs.

image

It names Hotel Landy. a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel less than a seven-minute drive from Universal Orlando. with nightly rates starting as low as $95 or 25. 000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. It also highlights the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at the Entrance to Universal Orlando—stated as the hotel’s actual name—with rates starting at around $117 or 34. 000 Hilton Honors points per night.

For Universal Studios Hollywood, the Hilton Los Angeles Universal City is described as within walking distance, offering rooms with park views, with rates starting at $209 or 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

image

Near Universal Kids Resort in Texas, the article points to the Courtyard by Marriott Dallas Frisco, about a five-minute drive from the park, with rates starting at $148 or 14,800 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

None of this changes the basic reality: Universal vacations can quickly exceed budgets. But the core idea is simple—points and miles can shave real cash off the stay, especially when they help cover hotel costs and, in the right cases, bring Universal Express Unlimited into the booking.

By the time Butterbeer is priced at about $8 per ice, a smart redemption strategy can feel like the difference between a trip that strains your wallet and one that leaves room for the fun.
