Plex adds $249.99 five-year pass after $749.99 hike

Plex five-year – After raising the Lifetime Plex Plan to $749.99 on July 1, Plex has introduced a new five-year Plex Pass priced at $249.99, offered alongside its monthly $6.99 and annual $69.99 options.

When Plex increased the cost of its Lifetime Plex Plan to $749.99 starting July 1. a lot of long-time users felt the loss immediately: the older $249.99 Lifetime price was suddenly gone. But Plex didn’t leave them with just the higher ceiling. It now offers a five-year alternative for $249.99—priced to look familiar, but ending in the middle of people’s plans.

The new five-year Plex Pass costs $249.99 and is designed to provide streaming access without the ongoing rhythm of a traditional subscription. Plex sells it alongside its monthly $6.99 subscription and annual $69.99 subscription. giving users a longer runway than the yearly option while avoiding the “forever” commitment that’s now come with a much steeper price.

For many, the number will ring a bell. Plex set the five-year pass at $249.99—the same amount the Lifetime Plex Plan cost before the price rise. Still, it’s not the same deal. With the five-year option, the clock runs out. After the five-year period ends. users will have to sign up for another five-year plan or an equivalent option—or shift to a monthly subscription instead. Plex also makes it clear there won’t be any grandfathered pricing for those who buy now. The expectation. in Plex’s view. is that subscriptions will go up in price over time—even within the five-year window.

Plex users may find that the new pass does soften the impact, at least on paper. Buying the annual plan for the same five-year period would cost the equivalent of three and a half years of the annual plan’s price. while opting for monthly pricing would land at just under three years’ worth of the monthly total—making $249.99 feel like a cost-saving move for those who want time without constant renewals.

But the emotional punch of the change is tied to what Plex said about why the Lifetime pass became less appealing over time. In justifying the Lifetime price increase, Plex admitted it had previously considered removing the Lifetime Plex Pass altogether. The reason is straightforward: recurring subscriptions sustain long-term development. while a lifetime pass doesn’t. and becomes less useful to Plex as the software’s needs evolve.

Plex’s new pricing. the company said. “reflects the real. ongoing value of the software we’re committed to building and maintaining for years to come.” The company frames the update as protection for the work required to keep Plex running—yet for consumers. it also draws a line between “lifetime” and “years. ” and it asks them to keep paying as time moves forward.

That’s where the five-year option lands: it’s a bridge, not a rescue. Plex’s Lifetime Plan is now $749.99, and the new five-year pass is positioned as a middle path for people who want affordability and duration—just not the original promise of endless access.

The other reality Plex customers are being nudged toward is comparison. The high cost of the Lifetime pass makes lower-tier options—and alternatives—more tempting. One often mentioned is Jellyfin, which is free to use. It offers core streaming functionality similar to Plex, though it requires more work to get it up and running.

For now, Plex’s message is clear: if you want to lock in a longer term, the five-year pass at $249.99 is the new target. But if you were hoping that “Lifetime” still meant exactly that, the price jump on July 1 has already changed the terms.
