Platner weighs next steps after assault accusation resurfaces

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee in Maine’s Senate race, said he will “reflect on the best path forward” after a new sexual assault allegation emerged from a former partner. The timing puts his candidacy in jeopardy with the ballot deadline one week away
The question facing Graham Platner doesn’t just concern the allegations now circulating about his conduct. It’s also about time.
In a video message released Monday. the Maine Democratic Senate nominee said the claims were “troubling. serious. and false. ” and that he and his campaign would “reflect on the best path forward.” He added the reflection would consider “the political reality” while he weighed what comes next for “the state that I love” and “the goal of defeating Susan Collins.”.
His message landed as Democrats are staring at a hard deadline: the ballot deadline is a week away. That means the party could still replace Platner if he decides to step aside before the deadline passes. Ahead of the new reporting from Monday, Platner’s campaign abruptly canceled a series of scheduled events.
The allegation itself is the most explosive turn in a campaign already marked by repeated controversy. A woman who says she dated Platner between 2019 and 2021 alleged that in 2021 the Marine turned oyster farmer arrived at her home uninvited—“almost blackout drunk”—and forced her to have sex while he ignored her protests. The accuser, Jenny Racicot, is 41 and a resident of Maine.
Racicot told Politico that she was pleading with Platner not to proceed. She said she realized there was “no consent” as the assault unfolded. and that he ejaculated despite her not being on birth control. She said that when she confronted him the next morning, Platner claimed he did not recall what happened.
Racicot said she broke off the relationship and ceased contact shortly after confirming she was not pregnant.
To support her account, Racicot provided Politico with email exchanges between herself and her therapist. In those messages, she discussed potentially coming forward and seeking corroboration of the allegations. Politico also spoke to a subsequent partner of Racicot’s. who said Racicot described the assault to him in 2023—two years before Platner announced his candidacy.
The reporting also includes Facebook messages from 2023 between Racicot and an acquaintance who had been set up on a date with Platner. In those messages. Racicot wrote that he “can be charming and funny” and “a decently intelligent person. ” but that she ended up “in a bad situation with him” and “will just very politely call him consensually careless at times […] when drunk. ” according to the account provided to the outlet.
Platner’s Senate run began with a win in the Democratic primary last month despite several controversies. setting up a direct matchup with Republican incumbent Susan Collins. Since then. the campaign has faced multiple scandals that have destabilized Democrats’ position in a race widely viewed as a must-win.
Racicot’s allegation—framed as a sexual assault tied to a specific episode in 2021—could prove the breaking point. Platner has said the reporting is false. but the political stakes now sit alongside the personal ones: with the ballot deadline one week away. the choice over whether to stay in the race is no longer theoretical.

Susan Collins deserves better. Replace him already.
He says it’s false but the timing is brutal like a week before ballots?? Also “best path forward” sounds like PR talk to me. Canceling events makes it worse.
Wait so he’s an oyster farmer turned Marine? I saw something about birth control and my brain just went straight to “oh so he was just careless”?? Like not that it’s okay, but if he “didn’t recall” that means he was blackout drunk or something. Idk I’m confused.
Democrats keep acting shocked every time a nominee gets accused. Ballot deadline being a week away feels like they’re rushing a decision, not a conscience thing. “Troubling serious and false” is such a weird phrase too, like which one is it? Also defeating Susan Collins shouldn’t be the whole point if this is real.
