Pittsburgh pools, recreation closures hit July 4 weekend

Pittsburgh pools – Pittsburgh-area swimmers and families are being urged to double-check schedules for the Independence Day holiday, with most pools running shortened hours Friday, July 3, while several pools and recreation centers close for part of the weekend.
By the time the heat settles in over Pittsburgh, plans start to matter: which pool is open, which recreation center is shut, and whether “holiday hours” means a full day—or just a few hours before the gates close.
City officials are marking the Independence Day holiday with a mix of shortened schedules and outright closures across public facilities, including pools and recreation centers. The city’s website ties the holiday schedule to America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
Most city pools will shift on Friday, July 3. On that day, most pools will operate from 12 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday will run on regular hours. But some locations will be closed entirely, and recreation centers will not reopen until Sunday.
City pools: shortened hours Friday, full weekend except three
Most pools will be open for reduced hours on Friday, July 3, before returning to their normal schedules on Saturday and Sunday.
Homewood, McBride and Sue Murray pools, however, are closed.
Recreation centers: closed Friday and Saturday
Pittsburgh recreation centers will close for part of the holiday weekend. They will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, and will observe regular hours on Sunday, July 5.
Other public facilities: limited days and full weekend shutdowns
Several additional Pittsburgh public facilities will also be closed for portions of the weekend:
Healthy Active Living Seniors Centers will be closed from Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5. Schenley Roller Rink will be closed Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, and will open for regular hours on Sunday, July 5. Mellon Park Tennis Bubble will be closed on Saturday, July 4, but will be open on Friday, July 3 and Sunday, July 5.
Trash and recycling: collection continues as usual
For residents planning holiday outings—and hoping their neighborhood doesn’t fall behind—Independence Day will not affect sanitation service. Trash and recycling collection in Pittsburgh will be picked up as usual.
The schedule changes come as families try to beat the summer heat over the long weekend, with most pools still available—but not necessarily for a full day on Friday, July 3.
